Happy New Year to all GRITS out there. I am pretty sure a serious amount of hibernation is going on at this point with the cold
weather.
First, we will start with the announcement: Smith and I agreed to again host the Southern Tandem Rally. It will be based out of
Mebane - from Sept 23-25th, 2011. The overall plan is to ride one day west towards the Alamance Battleground, then East towards -
of course - Maple View Ice Cream Farm, where Neomonde will treat us to lunch, and the last route will take us north of town. All
tandem friendly terrain. We will send further info as plans develop. This is your opportunity to ride with another 80+ teams
without having to drive for hours.
Secondly, we are not sure what to do about the ride calendar. Over the last few years, the GRITS rides have not been very
attended: where we had 3 to 5 teams max showing up this past year. We have been just as busy as you guys are and missed quite a
few ourselves. So, we just want to know whether the groups thinks we should still put a calendar together.
Thanks for letting us know your thoughts.

Loretta and I plan on riding more this year and would be interested in both
participating in group rides and sponsoring a ride. We have attended a few
GRITS rides and sponsored tandem rides in the mid 1990's before GRITS so
have some experience to offer if you are interested.

What about putting a little weekend camping tour on the schedule, too, maybe in the spring. Last year, in preparing for our tandem tour in France, we rode from Durham to Hyco Lake Campground in Caswell County, then to Staunton River State Park, east of South Boston, VA. Then to Occoneechee State Park in Clarksville, VA. The rural roads were very lightly traveled and scenic. And relatively easy pedaling despite panniers and tent.
All the best,
Roy & Zeleny

Hi everyone,

The calendar does help us to plan rides even if we can't always attend. 3-5
teams is still good for a group ride.
I would be happy to offer my help with planning STR. While I'm currently
unemployed I have some time that I could help organize and plan some aspects
of the event.

Amy and I miss the whole tandem experience. With a 3 yr old and an 11
month old, I have not yet convinced Amy it is time to invest in a quad.
We hope to be back in the mix in the next few years but are not spending
much time on the bike right now.
I appreciate your continued dedication to the group and the local
cycling scene!
Matt-
We are in the midst of finalizing all the budgetary details for STR. One of the questions we had for you guys was: in the event
you cannot ride, would be willing to volunteer to be the hosts for the Saturday lunch? The job consists of getting to MVIC agri
center around 10 AM, set the tables, receive the food when Neomonde drops it off, then greet the teams when they show up. Smith's
dad will be there too, but he is 83 and I do not want him to get too stressed and overwhelmed, so either Smith and I do it, or we
find trusted volunteers.
What's in it for you: if we have enough registrants, we buy you lunch and dinner saturday and you are more than welcome to join
the rides on your single and show up friday night for the social event.
Let us know what you think. We know you would prefer to ride it, but if you cannot and still want to participate, we welcome the
help.
Thanks
