Jerry Goldstein, founder of BioCycle, dies at 81

Pioneer in composting, recycling and sustainability started magazine in 1960

Jerome "Jerry" Goldstein, founder of BioCycle magazine and a pioneer in recycling, composting and sustainability, died May 17 in Whitehall, Pa.

In 1960, Goldstein founded Compost Science, which would later become BioCycle.

"Our editorial objective is to set up a central medium — a clearinghouse — for valuable information for municipal and industrial officials responsible for the treatment and disposal of organic waste materials," he wrote in the first issue, according to an obituaryon BioCycle's web page.

Goldstein was also an author. His books included "How to Manage a Company Ecologically," "Garbage As You Like It," "Sensible Sludge," and "How to Start a Family Business and Make It Work."

Born in 1931, Goldstein graduated with an English degree from Rutgers University, where he edited the school newspaper, according to his obituary in the Allentown (Pa.) Morning Call. He also was a member of Gamma Sigma, one of the first interracial and interfaith social fraternities.

Goldstein was "one of the world's leading ecopioneers, ... an early and persistent advocate of conserving and reusing natural resources, composting, recycling and ecoentrepreunering," said the BioCycle obituary. "His vision for a sustainable planet touched many, encouraging people around the world to do what they could with the resources they had."

Thanks for this, Eric. I have the sad sense that he will just miss the fullest flowering of all that he started a half century ago, but I hope he had a sense that momentum was building at last.

[Neil Seldman]

Jerry Goldstein was a giant of a man. Smart, generous, he always had time for people interested in the field. He took so much time helping me as a neophyte recycler, I only hope my career has lived up to the expectations he set.

He will be missed. But he has left a great institution and family to carry on.

If there is a heaven, Jerry is there!.
