Friends,

A few critical action items are on the sustainable transportation plate (or chopping block).  This is one of those weeks when you can make a difference by stepping up and showing up.  Whether you want to help save a bike lane in Arcata, support justice for public safety, or speak for the future of our region, please try to make it to one or more of the starred events below.

Bike Masterplan Webinar

Arcata City Hall, Wed., June 17, 12-1pm

Arcata is about to update its bicycle masterplan later this summer, so this is a good opportunity to get informed about what a bike masterplan can do.

Wheelin’s Wednesdays, What about my STUFF?

Humboldt Municipal Water District, Wed., June 17, 12-1pm

Another workshop for budding bicycle commuters.  Learn to carry the right tools, wear the right clothing and fit it all on your bike.  This is part of a 4 part series, so stay tuned for future workshops.

*Save the Bike Lane

Arcata City Council Meeting, Wednesday, June 17, 6pm

Staff is recommending removal of the bike lane on H Street between 11th and 9th Streets in order to widen the sidewalks.  There is another option (Option 3) the council could opt for that keeps the bike lane, and provides even wider sidewalks, by eliminating parking on one side of the street.  The council needs to hear from you about priorities for our downtown streets.

*Public Safety and Justice: Alan Bear Hearing

Humboldt County Courthouse, Courtroom #8, Thursday, June 18, 8:30am

Greg Jennings was on his way home from work wearing bright clothing and riding his bike as far to the right as possible on Route 299 near Blue Lake when Alan Bear’s vehicle swerved into the shoulder, hit Greg and killed him with the left front bumper.  If you can, attend this hearing in bike clothing to support Greg’s wife Lisa, and to remind the Judge and District Attorney that protecting public safety is of paramount importance in our justice system.

*Stop Sprawl with HCAOG

Eureka City Hall Room 207, Thursday, June 18, 7pm

The Humboldt County Association of Governments will choose a draft methodology for allocating housing to the cities and unincorporated county.

  • The Regional Housing Needs Plan will have a profound affect on our health, traffic, economy, greenhouse gas emissions and resilience to fluctuating fuel prices.
  • Do we plan for more housing in the cities close to jobs and services, or continue to push development out into resource lands and cause more car dependence and traffic?
  • Green Wheels and the Healthy Humboldt Coalition are recommending the “70/30” methodology that plans for more housing close to jobs.

See you out there!
