Friends,

A lot is happening this coming week.  Join us and make a difference for transportation choice!

Blue Lake Kids’ Bike Rodeo

Monday, June 8, 10:30 am, Blue Lake Elementary School

Kids: get a safety check for your bike, free helmet (or make sure the one you have is fitted properly), and hone your bike-handling skills.

Justice for Cyclist Victim's Family and Friends

Wednesday, June 10, 8:30 am, Humboldt County Courthouse

Greg Jennings was riding as far to the right as possible on 299 last August and had almost arrived back to Blue Lake from his job in Arcata when he was struck and killed.  There will be a preliminary hearing, June 10, 8:30 am for the motorist involved in the collision, Alan Bear, who is charged with negligent vehicular manslaughter.  Several of us plan to attend in cycling clothing to encourage the court to enforce public safety for all road users.

***General Plan - Land Use Element Townhall Meeting***

Thursday, June 11, 5:30pm, College of the Redwoods

We had a good turnout at the April 30th Planning Commission Hearing, but we need to keep it up if we want balanced transportation to be a part of Humboldt’s future.  The most beautiful bike lanes in the world won’t reduce traffic much if the grocery store is still 5 miles away.  The Land Use Element of the Humboldt County General Plan is an opportunity for our unincorporated communities to plan for proximity between home, work and play as the county develops over the next 20 years, so that choosing the bike or walking is easy.  We need to insure that the Land use Element effectively plans for:

·         Limiting urban footprint expansion

·         Compact mixed-use development that places jobs, parks and housing in close proximity

·         Reduced parking requirements to encourage infill projects that are less car-intensive

·         Limitations on car-dependent big-box development

It will be critical that our perspective is heard, so go to this hearing, and send in written comments to County Planner, Martha Spencer.

There is decent bus service to this event, but drive if that’s what it takes for you to be there!

Green Wheels is Hosting NEC Arts!Arcata

Friday, June 12, 6-9pm, Northcoast Environmental Center, 1465 G Street, Arcata

Join us for interesting art by Bay Area artist Kevin E. Taylor, live music and good company.  Take this opportunity to come talk shop about bikes, trails, transit and all aspects of transportation. An assortment of local wines, provided by Libation, as well as snacks will be available for visitors.

Cooper Gulch Trail Day!

Saturday, June 13, 9am, Cooper Gulch Parking Lot

Come participate in a community trail-building project at Cooper Gulch in Eureka.  Bring shovels and gravel rakes, gloves, and water bottles.  This is a flagship project demonstrating community will for safe and convenient travel-ways.  Don’t miss out! Contact Green Wheels volunteer, Kevin Wright, with questions or call 978-500-6933.

See you out there!

-Chris
