Fingers Crossed!

We just finished up a great weekend, visiting two more potential customers.
It’s been fun to see how receptive everybody is to the idea. Now we just
need to hope that lead-free soil comes through for us…

Keeping our fingers crossed!

Getting Ready for the 2012 Season!

We hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful, sunny February day. The Yard
Birds are currently checking out plots & lots for the 2012 season. Contact
us at yardbirds80 [at] gmail.com or send us a message on Facebook. Check
out how it works below.

How it works:
Join us to create a balanced & responsible relationship between yourself,
the food you eat and the farmers who grow it. We use organic methods and
crop rotations to maximize the space and output on your land. This mutually
supportive relationship between backyard farmers and the community helps
develop an economically stable local food system.

Commitment:
Members share in the weather-related risks of growing food with the
farmer, and in return receive a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce
throughout the growing season.

What We Provide:
Our knowledge and expertise in small scale urban farming.

Natural and sustainable farming methods in your backyard. We are not
certified organic, but we use the most organic methods possible for
sourcing, planting and maintenance

Soil amendments, transplants, seeds, fertilizers.

Weekly visits to ensure the farm is growing well—including pest inspection,
weeding and planting.

Weekly harvest basket at your backdoor.

What We Require:
At least six (6) hours of sunlight on a plot ranging from 1000 to 10,000
square feet.

Access to water (on a separate meter).

An area for compost. This item is ideal, but negotiable.

What happens if I just want some help with my existing garden plot?
Yard Birds will happily provide consultation services for beginning
gardeners or land owners with small plots seeking an extra hand. We can
tailor your garden to meet your taste buds. We will advise you on how to
approach the season, when to plant what, where, how, etc. We can guide you
in how often to fertilize, irrigate, and maximize your grow season. We can
teach you about starters, cover crops, season extenders, etc. These
services would be provided for a negotiable hourly fee.

Hi Yard Birds! I've got access to a barren earth yard in somerville. I like
the sound of what you're doing here! Can you tell me more? Thanks Jo
jowightman

Hi Jo,

Thanks for contacting us! We’re excited to begin backyard farming this
summer. We’ll be using organic methods to farm people’s yards. We’re aiming
to compile a few different lots in order to assemble about a 1/4 acre of
farmable land. We’ll form a customer-based CSA as a benefit for allowing us
access to your land. This means that you (along with other customers) will
receive a share of the crop from all of the lots, allowing us to grow more
variety over the season. Please feel free to contact us at
yardb...@gmail.com for further information. We’d be happy to set up a
meeting to take a look at the land and discuss any questions you may have.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Yard Birds blog!

Who are we? Two passionate urban farmers with little land and big dreams…

That’s where participating land owners come in.

Who are you? You have land to spare. You want to participate in the local
food movement, support local farmers and enjoy a small vegetable share with
other families in your community.

What? Vegetables grown in succession for market and community vegetable
share in local backyards.

How? You give us access to your land and we farm it. We grow fresh local
produce while practicing sustainable methods.

Follow us here as we venture into our first official season!
