Hi All,

I'm Manisha Anantharaman, a PhD student in Environmental Science and Policy at UC Berkeley. My research deals with understanding the trajectories for consumption growth in India, its environmental and climate implications, and finally, studying initiatives to make consumption of energy and resources more sustainable among India's consumers.

A group like Green-India is really interesting to me as it brings together people who share a common concern for the environment, but have different opinions on how best to go about dealing with issues. Forums like this that allow debate and discussion are important to 'mainstreaming' environmental concern, and my work looks to study that process.

Nice meeting you all :)

Manisha

    Hi All & Hi Manu

It is indeed a very good initiative taken up by you.

    I'l start with introducing myself.

I am an Environmental and Natural Resource Specialist currently managing
greening of supply chain at Moser Baer India Ltd. Besides SCM, I am also
involved in energy conservation, Quality Management Systems, energy audits
    etc. at MBIL.

Green India is a very good forum, sometimes its posts are very informative

    Hi All,
I would provide my details as Background and Present.

    Background:
My name is Amit Beriya. I am a graduate in Energy Engineering from IIT
Kharagpur. I got very much interested in alternative energy soruces during
my BTech course itself. I have worked on projects related to solar pv and
fuel cell, mostly theoretical and laboratory experiments.

    Present:
I am working in fuel cell research for Nissan, the Japanese automotive
company in Chennai. As a personal project, I am also working on designing a
LED lamp power by multiple sources, solar pv being one. I have also written
a blog on solar lamps in India, which can be found at

    Hi,
I am an architect from Pune. I am sceptical about technology altogether,
because I believe that resources are finite, and as long as we are 'growing/
developing' we are not quite going to reverse any trends. But that being
humanity's trend, and me being just another architect, I stick to honesty in
    architecture as a solution.

I am currently working on the design of bungalows, water and sanitation
systems. My clients say that they are very happy with me. My learning ground
and prior work has been with Biome environmental solutions( Bangalore),and
    The ecological society ( Pune).

If you were to build your homes please do try to build them yourself
-actually along with the mason. I think this way we will have smaller homes
which are honest to our needs, and not extravagant. Architects are a luxury
:) I like green india because its educative.Green technologies do help in
making the users more responsible of their backyard produced stuff and hence
resources at large. The awareness is awesome, thanks to all of you.

    Sincerely,
    Pooja Joshi.

Though this is my first post to this group, I have joined this group few
months ago and have been going through all the posts of this group.

I have been following this group, to know the technical details of various
available clean energies and Govt initiatives for the same.
And i am gaining good knowledge from this group, thanks to everyone, who are
sharing quite useful information to everyone.

Hi Amit, Richa, Pooja and Abdul,

Thanks for your messages and for your kind words about Green-India. I'm glad
you're finding the forum useful. I'll respond to some of the points in a
    separate email.

Other new members who are thinking about introducing themselves but haven't
made up their mind, now would be a good time to send that email.

Even if you have been here for some time, made a few posts but have
questions you haven't posted, please don't hesitate.

A community can only thrive if all of its members participate in it from
time to time -- even if it is only to seek answers rather than provide
    them.

If the share of members who benefit from a community as silent observers far
exceeds those who actively participate in it, it's not a healthy trend. I
    look forward to your post.

    Thanks,
    Manu

    Hi Amit,

    That's a fascinating profile.
Are there any cleantech areas in which IIT-Kharagpur has demonstrated
leadership compared with other IITs? You mentioned fuel cells. Which are the
best research institutions working on fuel cells in India?

I also admire Nissan-Renault - the only company among the big auto majors
which is working on delivering a no-frills consumer electric car to the
market as early as next car.

About LED lighting, I notice that on your blog you have given fairly low
scores to some of the leading names in India in this area. D.light for
example, has pioneered low cost lantern -- as low as Rs.500 (without any
subsidy, if I'm correct) that I believe is flying off the shelves. Why do
you give them only 6/10. I'm curious.

    Thanks,
    Manu

    Hi Richa,

Very interesting profile as well. Would be great if you could elaborate what
'greening of supply chain' involved at Moserbear.

I happened to meet and interact with your CEO Rajiv Arya at a panel on
Cleantech I chaired at Entrepreneurship Summit in IIT Delhi earlier this
year. Extremely knowledgeable fellow with a very helpful and
humble demeanour. Learned from our interaction that MBIL apparently isn't

    Hi evryone and Manu,

Trust me people who are writing now are not hesitant, probably just tied up
    with something. :) like me!!!!

Let me introduce myself, I am Kanchan Bhat.

Background - I am an Architect from Pune University and then I did my
Master's in Sustainable Design from the University of Sydney along with
Graguate Diploma in Heritage Conservation. My core interest is Sustainable
Design but I did Heritage Conservation out of sheer interest and enthusiam
those people have to save the whatever little bit history they have. It's
infact amusing to a certain extent. During my time in Sydney I worked with
various energy companies and in all kinds of roles. Learnt a lot about
    carbon trading (REC's).

Currently - I am working as an Associate Consultant with Wipro EcoEnergy
which is a very new division of Wipro located in Bangalore. I am into Green
Infrastructure Solutioning. I take care of sustainable designing solutions
and green certification for our clients. We are venturing into GRIHA and I
am sure it will be an exciting ride.

I very often in my client meetings find that people want green building just
as a value addition, to raise their market stakes. They do not understand
the value of being sustainable and energy efficient. The hardest part is
they are not ready to change how much ever you try to convince them, but I
am determined to do it sooner or later.

I have just joined thsi group very recently and thank Manu for initiating
    this introductry session.

    Hello all

I am not a new member as per Manu's definition! I have made a few posts
and recommended this excellent group to many. However, ecouraged by
Manu's gentle nudge, here is this email.

I am Sreekumar N, working with Prayas Energy Group, Pune. I am
electrical engineer (BTech - IIT-B and MTech from KGP) and worked with
the industry (control & instrumentation, IT based systems for power) for
few years before joining Prayas. Prayas works on public interest
oriented policy analysis and advocacy in energy sector, with higher
focus on electricity. This covers electricity sector policy &
regulation, energy efficiency, renewable systems and climate justice.

Let me share with you our recent publication, which focusses on
    equitable access to electricity:

Electricity for All: Ten Ideas towards Turning Rhetoric into Reality - A
Discussion Paper , Prayas, May 2010.

This discussion paper suggests few concrete action ideas that could be
taken up to accelerate effective electricity access for the poor in India.
Even after six decades after independence, and two decades since the
arrival of ‘reforms’, the poor continue to miss the electricity bus. The
first decade of reforms had no explicit focus on poor. The few recent
initiatives like the Rajiv Gandhi household electrification program or
quantification of standards of performance for distribution companies
are yet to yield results. There is an overwhelming feeling in civil
society that the basic needs of the poor have been neglected, while
there is disproportionate interest in market related issues, which
immediately benefit large consumers. This paper suggests ten concrete
action ideas, which could result in a quick improvement of electricity
service to the poor. These ideas have to be implemented by regulators,
distribution companies and the Government. These are techno-financially
feasible and can be adopted within the existing framework.

    Hi Pooja,

Unlimited economic growth within a limited ecosystem cannot be sustained
forever, there's no denying that. At the same time, at Climate
    Revolution<http://climaterevolution.net/>we believe, we have
everything at our hand to address this.

While I promote solutions to the climate crisis many of which are
technological, I keep my distance from people who promote a continued
consumption driven pathway believing that a new technology breakthrough in
future will solve all our problems.

As veteran members may know, I hold the opinion that much of our problem is
political in nature and that we have everything _today_ to get cracking at
this. It's not going to be easy but we can do this.

My learning ground and prior work has been with Biome environmental

That's a very interesting suggestion coming from an architect and I believe,
potentially controversial among your peers? I wonder what would your former
boss say about this. Chitra is a dear friend and member of Green-India.

    Hi Abdul,

    Thanks for introducing yourself.

Incidentally, I've been to your Hyderabad campus couple of years ago (IYCN's
National Youth Summit on Climate Change), met Rohan Parikh and saw the
amazing work you guys are doing. We were lucky to hear a talk from Mr.
    Narayan Murthy himself.

Some of the members may not know but Infosys is quite a leader in cleantech
adoption at its campuses. They are moving towards making all of their
operations completely carbon neutral through on-site solutions in emission
reductions and off-site investments in renewable energy generation
    technologies.

They are building a new campus in Hyderabad now where they are trying an
interesting experiment. They've divided half the building area that will
feature radiant cooling inspired from the way large buildings were cooled in
    India during the Mughal era.

The rest of the building will feature conventional cooling technologies.
They expect the first part will consume about one third energy. More
information in this Treehugger post from a few days How They Air Conditioned

Chandak <http://www.princeindia.org/> -- to whom I'm equally grateful for
their valuable and generous contributions in making this a useful community.

    Thanks,

    Hello everybody!!
Like a lot of people, this is my first post on this group!! Thank you Manu
    for starting this discussion..

I am Gaurav Durasamy and I have completed my Bachelors in Mechanical
Engineering at College of Engg, Guindy. I am pursuing my Masters in
Sustainable Energy Technology at TU Delft in Netherlands currently. I am
very interested in alternate energy projects and carbon management. I have
also done a project with Vestas Pvt. Ltd on "Wind Turbine Yield Improvement"

    Hello Isabelle,

We met very briefly at Bridge to India office earlier this year so it's good
to learn more about you. Thank you for the introduction.

A monthly get-together -- I'm sorry, but I'd hate to contribute to emissions
from 8-10 cars (driven by single passengers) solely for feel-good meetings
but if we could organise behind a common purpose, I'd be happy to support
    it.

It'd be great to meet up, for example, if there are members in the Delhi
area who are willing to take up grassroots project like trying to convince
board of a Resident Welfare Association (RWA) to pursue energy efficiency /
conservation project or a tree plantation drive (perfect time for that).

Of course, members are also free to organise an *informal *get together
among themselves. For Green-India support, I'll be more than happy if
members volunteer their time for a useful community engagement.

    Thanks,
    Manu
