Central Dakota Cyclists – Bicycle Advocacy Meeting
YMCA Community Room
May 15, 2012
In Attendance: Jason Doerr, Mark Liebig, Craig Schaaf, Al Thompson
· BIKE LANES / BIKE WEEK REVIEW: With the implementation of bike lanes in Bismarck, area cycling interests received positive press over the past week. THE NDDOT has started running PSA’s into the summer and both the City of Bismarck and NDDOT have set up bicycling safety/Share the Road websites. The CDC was recognized at the joint NDDOT-City of Bismarck May 10th Press Conference for serving as an advisory group for these actions and has forged a relationship that will hopefully yield further positive momentum for the cycling community. The CDC will focus upcoming efforts to see if we can carry this momentum to local law enforcement agencies by providing bicycle safety information and other bicycle friendly guidance.
· BIKE RODEO: Al and Mark will be attending the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office annual Bike Rodeo on May 17th at the Burleigh County Fairgrounds. Their primary duty will be to provide educate and fix minor bike ailments (mainly tires).
· 2012 EVENT PLANNING:
Harmon Rec Day is set for Sunday June 17th. A competitive timed hot lap on the 8.85 mile Otter Creek Trail will again be part of the festivities and Scheels will have demo Kayaks available at the event. Start time for the hot lap competition is 9:00am. Additional information about the event will be distributed soon via e-mail and Facebook.
Medora Group Ride: CDC will again lead a gathering of cyclists in Medora on Saturday June 23. Park Loop rides will occur at 9am and 1pm (MST) and start at Dakota Cyclery. Look for further announcements on the Facebook & CDC web sites.
CDC Bicycle Festival: Ideas were discussed for the Saturday August 25 Family Cycling Event co- sponsored with the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. The proposed route will run from Raging Rivers Water Park to Ft Lincoln State Park. An aid station at Ft Lincoln and possibly another spot on the route will be required. The proposed price will be $10 per person or $25 per family. Registration would occur at Raging Rivers at noon to 1:00 p.m. A registration table will also be staffed Saturday morning at the Go! Bismarck-Mandan event at Kiwanis Park. Mark will present these ides to YMCA representatives and further planning will take place over the summer.
Dates have also been announced for two other cycling events in June. Race to Sunset will be held on June 9th and 10th and the Bismarck Triathlon will be held on Saturday June 16th at McDowell Dam.
· SHARE THE ROAD LICENSE PLATES: Tyler Huber, who designed the CDC logo, has volunteered to present some ideas for a bicycle friendly license plate. The total cost per set of plates will be $80 if we can obtain 50 interested participants.
· The CDC has been approached by various national businesses to advertise on the CDC website. Members present decided that at this time it would be prudent to keep the website non-commercial and decline such invitations. Since we are a burgeoning organization we do not want to risk offending local vendors or supporters. We will continue to use the website as a place to list regional bicycle information, events and advocacy issues.
· Next Meeting: Thursday July 26th, 2012 at 6:00pm in the YMCA Community Room.
