U.S. makes record-high of marijuana arrests in 2005

U.S. law enforcement agencies made a record-high number of arrests for
marijuana violations in 2005, the FBI said in a report Monday.

In other words, there was one such arrest every 40 seconds last year.

The number of the marijuana arrests has increased continuously
year-on-year since 2002 and has more than doubled since the early
1990s, said the FBI.

Such arrests in 2005 far exceeded the total number of arrests in the
country for all violent crimes combined.

Marijuana arrests comprised 42.6 percent of all drug-related arrests in
2005.

Among those arrested for marijuana violations last year, some 88
percent were charged with possession only and the remaining were
charged with sale or manufacture of the illicit drugs.
