following discussions of the helium shortage, there was some renewed interest in solar balloons.  I finally got a chance to together a page with background, instructions, materials and assembly, as well as the work on this list that me and James Lent did back in 2010:

I can't say that they're the best option for mapping, but they're certainly the cheapest way to fly, weather permitting.

Thanks for posting this! We flew one of your 7' tetrahedral solar balloons near the Gowanus on Saturday and it was beautiful. I don't think ours would have even lifted a camera -- amazing to see that picture on your note of a giant solar balloon that can lift a person!

For anyone in the NYC area, we're planning a solar balloon making workshop for the end of June / early July. Drop a line if you have interest.
