Capturing all of sensory data (temperature, barometric pressure ) in a timestamped CVS file is complex(we have to use external library (Library)  to create .csv file). Instead of that can we use sql database to store all the parameter??
For weather info, I used weather.com data in my GPS navigation app so that should be okay. Anything new would be a great help.
Showing website for getting the materials to do a balloon or kite flight in android Web view would be easy as we have to show the webpage inside the app. So our application will never go into the background activity(this would remove the use of browser) or we should use browser in android??

Hi, Mohit - I think you're asking details about the Android application you're writing to take pictures from a balloon?

CSV or a plain text file is really preferable -- because many people aren't able to open and view an sqlite database file. Can't you simply save in a .txt file?

Weather.com sounds fine. I think it's best that you focus on the camera function first, though -- if we could have an Android app that would take clear, unblurred photos that would be a huge plus for us. The sensor data, weather, etc -- it's very nice but not the central goal here.

Best,
Jeff

What should be the strategy for "How to use accelerometer data to capture stable image"..do you have any specific idea that i can extend...

Hi Jeff,,last night i have an idea about capturing an image using opengl surfaceview and camera together since we know that gpu processing is much fast than cpu processing and by calculating pitch, yaw and roll from rotation vector while camera is in the air, we can use rotation, translation method in opengl to minimize the blurr by performing these operation in anti direction(opposite manner) to reduce the effect of motion on image capturing process.

That sounds interesting... maybe as a later step we could incorporate "unblurring" techniques like that.

I fully agree that image data acquisition is really most important and using a gyroscope(3-axis servo accelerometer) would greatly improve and automate the map knitting process. I reviewed the images for the East Providence mapping project and I must say it was extremely laborious.

The gyro's that are being used in the RC and drone markets could be used for the balloon mapping projects.

For future consideration we should keep on top of what Google is doing now that Larry Page Larry Page says that his ongoing hoarseness is the result of the paralysis of his vocal chords and that he has decided to fund voice-related medical research through the Voice Health Institute, based in Boston, Mass. He may be interested in what Public Lab is doing in this area.

Hi Jeff, I am looking for balloon/kite mapping video. If you have any video with you please share it with me. By using video, I would be able to know how much swinging/translation due to air is there while performing kite/balloon mapping.

It varies a lot -- compare this very calm day: http://publiclab.org/notes/gonzoearth/11-22-2011/video-occupy-uc-davis-nov-21-2011

with this slightly more turbulent flight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_8MMgdfOmc

or this one taken from a CMOS camera which has the "wobbly image" effect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnxNraPZP7k

thank you for videos, Jeff. It seems like swinging is mostly dependent on weather. Nothing we can do about it more than few image stabilization techniques.

Some have had success with a rudder like appendage the keeps the camera facing into the wind. Using two lines to mount the Camera on the flying line controls the pendulum effect

Hi Carlos, can you provide us some links regarding that?

Liz Barry has contact with the builder of this rig. I only saw it in operation and helped. KAP is my area of expertise.

There are good images and instructions here: http://publiclab.org/wiki/soda-bottle-rig and here: http://publiclab.org/wiki/pet-bottle-rubber-band-rig

But mohit - you probably don't have to worry about the hardware as part of your work. Of course, if you're interested, go for it! But writing the software doesn't *require* that you fly.

Mohit,
we usually use PET bottle rigs, for android phones the larger (1 gallon, 4 liter) water bottles are usually the best option.  There is a spreadsheet with different bottle dimensions on this page:
http://publiclaboratory.org/wiki/pet-bottle-rubber-band-rig

alternatively, there is the KAP feather, which is a commercial product:
