I'm with Michele, hot air balloons are magnificent but fairly impractical for mapping.  You have to have perfect conditions- basically no wind.  Solar hot air is much safer, but then you need even more difficult conditions: no wind, full sun. On the bright side, even a huge solar hot air balloon packs down to a lightweight ~20cm ball, so I keep one in my kit even though I almost never use it-- my last fight was January 2012 (see note below).

Juan-- Don't buy one of Praturlon's balloons. He's an expert, but you can make one as good as his for less than 20EUR:

Solar hot air balloons would be more useful if someone built an automatic altitude control and takedown system.  Then we could do low-altitude free flight and recover the balloon, payload, and imagery on the other side of a target, rather than try to wrangle it on a line.

My hot air balloon is kind of dangerous.  It doesn't burn the propane fuel completely so that's kind of a fire risk.  It's also hard to inflate without a lot of equipment.  I've moved to working with a big parafoil kite now, but I mostly take photos on the beach where there's lots of wind.

I agree, Mathew, the balloon are the best way for mapping and, since helium is expensive, the hot air balloon are the suitable alternative. I should save 500 EUR to buy one prêt-à-porter to Ch. Praturlon, from http://ballonsolaires.over-blog.com/

Excited to read this. Hot air balloons are still my favorite flying thing (sorry, kites!).

Sorry about that!  Proquest is being tricky.  Here's the link to the open access page: http://gradworks.umi.com/35/44/3544812.html  I hope that link works.

That's aggravating that it doesn't link from all the pages because I paid for it to be open access so no one would ever have to pay for it.

best,
Michele

Hi everyone,
Some of you might be interested in this.  My dissertation is (finally!) available online for download (open access): http://search.proquest.com/docview/1235214146  One of the chapters outlines the air photo system I built using a remote controlled hobby hot air balloon and explains the photo processing workflow that I used.  And there's lots of pictures.  If anyone has trouble downloading it, let me know and I can make smaller one available on a different site.  The other chapters are about California beach plant geography/ecology, so someone might find that interesting too, but it's not the topic of this group.  :)

best,
Michele

NYC has an ongoing project to build a truly giant solar hot air balloon.
We started it last summer at Mathew's solar balloon and kite building workshop at the Pfizer building:
Would love to keep working on this!
