The 8th Annual Mountain Justice Summer Training Camp in West Virginia is
only about 5 weeks away - this is my favorite event of the year and I hope
that you will come to the mountains of West Virginia in May to learn more
about mountaintop removal coal mining and the devastating effects it is
having on the mountains, animals, forests and streams of Appalachia.
This is Mountain Justice's biggest event of the year and we'd love to have
you join us!
Mountain Justice offers a low-cost and fun event based in an historic lodge
atop a beautiful West Virginia mountain - there are daily training and
skill-sharing workshops with mountain music and dancing in the evenings,
plus delicious home-cooked meals.
You will see mountaintop removal first hand and make new friends - meet
other caring, concerned people from across America who have come to
Appalachia to learn more about the issue of mountaintop removal.
You don't have to be an expert on coal mining or energy issues - we will
teach you about the history of Appalachia and how mining coal has
increased poverty in the region while destroying Appalachia's most precious
resouce: the mountain streams that provide drinking water for millions of
people in cities like Nashville, Louisville and Cincinnati. We will
challenge the stereotypes about Appalachia while envisioning a brighter
future for the region. And we will teach direct action and non-violent
civil disobedience skills in the tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King and
Gandhi.
Mountaintop removal affects people too, and we will have a number of
speakers from the local community who will talk about their love for the
mountains and their sadness at seeing them destroyed. Mountaintop removal
is hurting the health of people who live nearby - higher rates of cancer
and birth defects have been documented in numerous studies by Dr. Michael
Hendryx of West Virginia University.
Who comes to Mountain Justice Summer camp? People just like you. The
fight against mountaintop removal mining is probably the fastest-growing,
most vibrant and most exciting environmental campaign in the country.
Please join us for Mountain Justice Summer Training Camp and find out
why!
Camp starts on Saturday May 19 and runs through Saturday May 26 at the
beautiful Appalachian South Folklife Center
<http://www.folklifecenter.org/Pages/default.aspx>near Pipestem, West
Virginia.
You can register now by going to www.mountainjustice.org
