Hi there
I am working with some more people on an aerial image of a highway being built against the will of the residents in a southern Palestinian neighborhood in Jerusalem. There is a local struggle against the road and a very active facebook page for it (in arabic) with many followers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/129280007225993/?fref=ts
we'd like to publish the map soon and thinking of a way in which people can independently annotate it, mainly textually, to keep it simple.

I am wondering how to do this, and looking for your advise and ideas, here is the map, it is unfinished but thats the current version.
Using the mapknitter annotation tool at the moment requires sign in and I am afraid that this will be a serious barrier. Thinking of visibility/accessibility, it would also be great if you could see the whole image and at the same time still see its details. Maybe by creating an option for expanding the banner/window?
Flickr is also a nice option, you can see the whole picture but again, only users can annotate - here is a test I did on a different aerial image I have on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fiestin/7858931792/in/set-72157631241122632
Facebook is definitely an option using the face tagging system, although it also requires sign-in, but as many followers are registered to facebook, it is less of a problem.

It will be great to hear if you have other ideas on how to let people annotate the aerial image, maybe I missed something on the public lab's annotation tool, I'll be happy to get your input.

Thanks,
hagit.

Hi hagit - one of the issues with not requiring login is deciding who gets to delete or edit annotations -- could you imagine either

a) allowing anyone to delete/edit any annotation
b) not allowing anyone to delete/edit annotations
c) only allowing the map author to delete/edit

It seems like c) might work... we could somehow make a way for map owners to enable anonymous annotations, i guess? They would nominally be assigned to the owner's account, so that they could edit/delete them. Could that work for you?

Jeff

As to full-screen display, there is a link to "Web Viewer" to the lower right, which opens a full screen view. Clicking "Share" also shows a link to a full screen version.

I can add another button next to "Share" which says "full screen" to make it more clear.

Later you could always try something similar to git hub allowing users to clone a map to their account and to then make edits on their copy.

And by the way, that is a *remarkable* map!

I added the "fullscreen" feature. It was actually broken in the way I had described it, but that works now and there is also an additional "fullscreen" button. However, it does not allow annotation in that mode... i could try to figure that out too if it's helpful, but let's figure out the bigger questions about the annotation-for-anonymous-users feature.

How about saving a key in a cookie that allows the owner to edit
annotations?

Hey Jeff,
thanks, I am really happy we can do it based on the public lab platform! The third option is the best of course, that people can do unanimous annotations and only map author can delete or edit them. The full screen button works great, and yes, I was looking for the option to add annotations, it would be very useful to have it in full screen mode. About the share button - does this mean that I can embed the map on a webpage and it can be annotated directly on that page, meaning I'll be able to press full screen and start annotating or will it require clicking and moving to the mapknitter page? though both are good options.

thanks again :)

Hagit.

I've implemented a (possibly buggy) feature that adds:

* ability for anyone to anonymously annotate
* the map owner is able to delete annotations

I also have a fullscreen annotation mode working in tests, but haven't finished it yet.

However, I haven't made a way for a map owner to "enable" anonymous annotations yet. I can turn it on manually on the server on the map you've linked to, if you want to give it a try. Then i can add a button or something that only the map owner sees, so anyone can do it -- assuming it works OK.

Shall i enable it for the beit-safafa map?

Best,
Jeff

Hi Jeff and all,
Thanks for all your work on this one!

I have another idea that might add some crazy work to the developer side, but should be useful -
I suggest adding an additional multiple-choice-list-button that will allow users to see only annotations from specific users. Annotations will have to include some user-id in them, but it will allow viewers to see different perspectives on a map.

Good morning and good evening,

Shai.

that's great!
thanks for the effort, Jeff.
Yes, pls enable the BS map.
I also think shai's idea is good to develop in the long run.
