I think our thinking is modern when we think of the word "mad". I think it might be considered to be (sorry to be politically incorrect here) a "crazy" creature that would stay out in the rain and get soaked as my chickens do. The only time they don't like the rain is if it is coming down in buckets and/or the wind is kicking up.
