Good morning,

I was recently contacted by a member of the FIRST Robotics team regarding a Java mentoring volunteer opportunity.  Below is the announcement:

====
The FIRST program (usfirst.org) uses robotics competitions, much like sports
competitions, to encourage high school aged students to get involved in STEM
education. It uses a different game each year to challenge the kids to build a
robot in 6 weeks and compete against other teams in multi-day tournaments.
The format is 3-on-3 teams, where the team members change for each match,
and the tasks can be as different as shooting basketballs (2012) or throwing
frisbees and climbing for points (2013).

We are looking for a couple of people that might be interested in mentoring a
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team made up of high school students.
Java is one of the options that they are allowed to use to program their robot.
The goal is to take kids where they are at and help them improve through
mentoring.

We are asking for a commitment of at least 4 hours per week on a regular
weekday evening and/or Saturday schedule. The competition season is from
the first Saturday of January through the end of March, but some time will
also be spent on prep work and team building meetings in the fall. We would
like to be flexible to fit into your week. We will be meeting in the Plainfield
Township/Belmont area.

Please contact Co...@ParadiseTeams.org to volunteer or ask for more information.

Here are a couple of links to Youtube videos that show what these teams can
accomplish.
