The figures for April and May are expected to far higher, the
socialist dream of a superstate is melting away.

I'm not sure if european superstatehood is a socialist dream Pete. I
mean, Ken Clarke is fiercely pro-european and he's a tory!

No - I'm sure the supporters of such a Frankenstein's monster can't be
slotted easily into any pre-existing political groups. I prefer simply
to call them 'nutjobs'.

Calling the last rites on 'ever closer union' might be a tad premature
though. Germany could end this crisis tomorrow by officially putting
countries like Spain and Greece on its payroll and underwriting their
debt. It would mean however that Hitler's dream of a German dominated
europe would be realised more than 67 years after the last nazi forces
withdrew from the occupied zones. Welcome to the Fourth Reich.

I'd sooner see Europe go bankrupt.

Such accusations are just another political 'sound byte' made for effect ......... he has no argument.
The EU is in fact a CAPITALIST organisation, as is borne out by the CBI here. Any 'socialism', i.e. the Social Chapter is merely a safety valve, the prevention of one or more state gaining an economic advantage through manipulation of employment laws.

Pete, there's a reason why half the tory party including Margaret
Thatcher were pro EEC / EU - and that's because it was very good for
business. Free movement of labour and capital, free markets - these
are tory wet dreams (and why the tory party has only ever talked a
good game on the EU at election time but never ever did anything to
curtail it or address the undemocratic situation of a mandate from
1975 still being in force today).

Michael Heseltine was another euro-fanatic. An extremely successful
businessman worth over 300 million quid. Some socialist!

A common market is a very sensible idea, no party fought harder to
join the common market than LABOUR

Didn't they want to leave it in 1983?

The interesting thing here is that Thatcher supported 'ever closer
union'. Now that phrase is unambiguous to me - it means progression
towards a european state. Yet she, of all people, supported it. Isn't
it the case that she was just as deceitful and treacherous as Heath
and all the "no no no" thing was just for show - perhaps a final
appeal to the eurosceptic wing of the party to save her skin?

A single market is what Thatcher supported

But there was no secret made of the fact that a single market was only
to be the beginning of something far more ambitious. She knew what was
coming. Heath knew. Callaghan and Wilson knew. The political class
were acutely aware of what closer european ties would mean. The
population wasn't really in on it when they voted in 1975 though. They
were lied to.
