Hi

Rather than every government Department separately requesting
information or briefings with leading social media monitoring vendors,
the Department of Health and Ageing's Online Communications Section is
hosting a free day-long cross-government briefing by four leading
social media monitoring vendors to provide a grounding in the
commercial social media monitoring options available to government
communicators and policy analysts.

This briefing is information-only, obligation-free and non-binding on
Agencies. It has been designed to provide background information to
support government departments in making more educated social media
monitoring decisions in the future.

The Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) invites other Commonwealth
Agencies to send representatives to this briefing. ACT Government
Agencies are also welcome to attend.

The briefing is being held in the auditorium at Scarborough House in
Woden on 22 November 2010. Attendees will be required to gather in the
building foyer by 9.00am so that visitor passes can be organised.

Agenda
9.15-10.15 Buzz Numbers (http://www.buzznumbershq.com/why-
buzznumbers/)
10.30-11.30 PeopleBroswr (http://www.peoplebrowsr.com/)
12.00 - 1.00 Lunch Option - Bellucis (limited numbers, at own expense
- $18.90 per head)
1.30-2.30 Alterian SM2 (http://socialmedia.alterian.com/products/
social-media-insights/)
3.00-4.00 Radian 6 (http://www.radian6.com/products/)

DoHA will not be providing morning or afternoon tea. A coffee shop is
available in the building.

This presentation will be suitable for government communications
professionals seeking to research, manage and evaluation campaigns and
programs and policy analysts responsible for community consultation
activities. Public servants from all areas are welcome to attend.
Numbers are limited to 80.  Please RSVP at: http://socialmediavendors.eventbrite.com/.

Please extend this invitation to your colleagues.

Thanks for hosting this event Lisa & team at DoHA - much appreciated.
It seems this is a hot topic elsewhere too, eg. this blog post by
Chris Boudreaux: http://www.socialtimes.com/2010/11/transformations-socialmedia-monitoring

For those not necessarily considering a commercial SM monitoring
solution, here's a guide to setting up a DIY social media dashboard:

Oops, should have looked more closely; the post is by Neil Glassman on
Social Times website (it was tweeted by Chris Boudreaux)
Here's another paper on this topic: Top tools to measure social media

Agreed. Lisa and her team put together a great program. Really well done!

Personally, I was somewhat disappointed with the quality of the
presentations. I wanted to see less sales pitch and more "here's a
contextual look at what we could actually do for government agencies
and how it's relevant to their work". I think my comments in the room
and on Twitter reflected that.

That said, I know I need to remember that I have rather more
experience at this than some and that my expectations and desire for
depth may be well diverged from the rest of the audience.

There was some great content, but I did want more depth and context
versus sales pitch. And I was disappointed at the lack of anyone
noting that quant data is only so useful. It's when you combine it
with qual that you get real insight.

Thanks for all the feedback on this event. It was a big ask to get the
vendors to all present with their competitors present and it was very
good of them to do so. I agree with Steven's comments that it could
have been improved with more of a focus on how it was relevant to the
business of government (rather than that of elections/politics) but,
having been a rep myself for private companies, know how hard it is to
get that sort of insight if you've never worked in government or have
limited relationships with people in government. Hopefully events
like this and the lunch will give both sides a chance to get what they
need to get productive outcomes.

The slide decks from the Social Media Monitoring (SMM) Event are now
available in the Govdex Gov 2.0 at
https://www.govdex.gov.au/confluence/pages/viewpageattachments.action?pageId=138379484
. If you do not have access, email Go...@finance.gov.au to join.

As mentioned at the SMM event we have Google tools and services
information event on the 9th of December. Get more details and
register at: http://googleinfosession.eventbrite.com/.

Nicely organised! Was any video or audio taken for those of us outside Canberra?

"Unfortunately that community is open to public servants only, and the person who provided the slides has requested that they not be made available outside of government."
Hmmm - now my understanding was that the session was attended by people who are not public servants - is that correct?

No, only people working in the public service were able to attend.

Those outside the PS are welcome to contact the vendors to arrange
presentations. The vendors were:

Buzz Numbers Jess Whittaker http://www.buzznumbershq.com/contact-us/
PeopleBrowsr Lachlan Maxwell http://www.peoplebrowsr.com/index.php?option=com_pages&view=contactus
AlterianSM2 Daniel Lodge http://socialmedia.alterian.com/contactus

I don't want to make too big a deal of this because whoever organizes the event gets to decide who comes. But if I had been turned down for an event on the basis of organisational affiliation (which I wasn't because I didnt apply) and then saw someone who competes for similar work tweeting about the event in detail, I'd probably be a bit miffed.

Hi Matt,

Putting my official hat as Online Communications Director at the
Department of Health and Ageing on, I note your concern.

Where these events are for public servants this includes contractors,
non-ongoing and ongoing staff currently working at public agencies.

The rationale is to foster connections, more open discussion and
knowledge sharing between colleagues who face similar challenges and
opportunities.

Given that anyone (potentially including permanent ongoing staff)
currently working in government may be involved in a recruitment
process or may be tendering for government contracts at the same time,
it is not a perfect filter, however it is better than no filter.

If you are working in government in a contract, non-ongoing or ongoing
role you are welcome to register to attend any future events we may
run on this basis.

Best regards,

Craig Thomler

Cheers Craig. The irony here is that I cannot make most of the Canberra events...
