Bike advocates- Here are two great articles about biking and one that speaks to the limits of oil.
If You Build Bike Lanes, They Will Ride http://www.good.is/post/if-you-build-bike-lanes-they-will-ride/
"A new study [PDF]
of 90 of the 100 largest cities in the U.S. helps answer the question
of what makes a city bicycle-friendly—and it turns out that the most
important factor affecting the number of cyclists is the prevalence of
bike paths."
Where Do People Walk and Bike the Most? It's Not Where You Think http://www.good.is/post/where-do-people-walk-and-bike-the-most-it-s-not-where-you-think/
This article is based on the a benchmark report by the Alliance for Biking and Walking.
- "Americans choose to walk for 10.5 percent of all their trips, and bike just 1 percent of the time" - "The state with the greatest percentage of cyclists and walkers: Alaska" “Gasoline is like $10 a gallon there. It's expensive to drive.”
Is ‘Peak Oil’ Behind Us? Gasoline is not going to get cheaper (relatively). World production of conventional crude oil (the stuff that is easy to extract) peaked in 2006 according to the I.E.A. Of course, the not-so-easy to extract stuff is still left and is more costly. http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/14/is-peak-oil-behind-us/
Local, local, local is going to be the key. So, we need to get building! :)
