I'm sure you're all so disappointed, but since it was both cold AND rainy I decided to stay home, make chicken soup and watch football. You all could come warm up here after :)

Well I was not in the least bit hungover but it was so cold and rainy so I didn't go either. I want to run Wednesday but I haven't gotten my parents to confirm yet. It really sounds like fun but kind of scarey.

Sorry for poaching the list serve, but I wanted to let you all know about a lecture series I am helping to put together in the Gorge which is now in its second year. The first one is this week on Wednesday. Come early to Springhouse to enjoy a glass of wine and mingle with all of the great people who will be there. I have or will have individual press releases for all of these if you want to learn more about a particular one (541-490-3466).
Please also let me know if you have ideas for future speakers. Our hope is to keep the series going.
All my best,
A
Earth Center hosts 2nd annual Sense of Place Lecture Series
This Wednesday, November 2 — Cheryl Mack: This Land was Their Land- the Life of Ellen Chenowith Underwood and the Early History of the Columbia River Gorge
The years between 1840 and 1860 were a tumultuous time in the Columbia River Gorge. Native people lived and gathered fish along the Great River as they had for millennia, while thousands of immigrants from the east streamed across the Plains and down the Columbia in search of a new life. The story of one Cascade Indian woman, who grew up in a cedar plank house along the shores of the Columbia River, near what is now Hood River, provides a small glimpse into this very unsettling time. This was a time when the U. S. Army built blockhouses to protect settlers in the Gorge. It was a time when Philip Sheridan led soldiers up the Columbia River to rescue settlers during an Indian attack. It was a time when the area now known as White Salmon served as the area's first Indian reservation. It is also a story of how one woman adapted and survived, remaining in her home along the Great River. Cheryl Mack is an archaeologist and historian who has worked in the Columbia River Gorge and the surrounding area since 1979. Join the Columbia Gorge Earth Center as we explore these questions in the second annual Sense of Place lecture series. The series seeks to foster deeper connections to our landscape and to each other via speakers who represent a variety of industries and perspectives.
All events take place at Springhouse Cellar in Hood River (13 Railroad Ave1st and Cascade) on the first Wednesday of each month. Doors open at 6 p.m. and lectures begin at 6:30 pm. Come early to mingle and enjoy a glass of wine.
Schedule
December 7 — Maija & Niko Yasui : Japanese Evacuation and Internment, the Hood River Story
January 4 — Steve Hawley: The Future of What Used to Be: Historical Abundance and the Hope of Restoring Ecosystems
February 1 — Darryl Lloyd: Time and Change on Mt. Adams
March 7 — Dr. Michael Beug: An Introduction to Mushrooms and their Ecosystem
April 4 — Jeanette Burkhardt: Salmon People and the Big River: Columbia River Native American Fisheries
About the Columbia Gorge Earth Center
The Columbia Gorge Earth Center is a 10-year-old nonprofit based in Hood River with a mission to promote the connection of economy, ecology and community in the Columbia River Gorge by empowering citizens to make sustainable choices in the areas of energy, waste, food, and soon, transportation. CGEC does this through via two avenues: serving as an incubator for new environmental non-profits and coordinating events that engage citizens in dialogue and action around environmental issues that face residents of the Columbia River Gorge. These events include the annual Green Living Tour, Earth Day, the Bike Commute Challenge, films and more. More Info: www.cgec.org
