Hi ,
we are currently looking at upgrading , redesigning the software for
displaying our bustimes at http://www.jjkavanagh.ie.

Google transit is not supported in Ireland yet as google maps is not
fully covered, but If we upgrade our system we would like to be
compatible with google transit in the future.

I would love to hear if anyone has any recommendations?

Thanks

Adam

Adam,
Google has posted the process to get on board at Google Transit here:
http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/help/faq_transit.html#adding_an_agency
There is a data specification, Google Transit Feed Specification
(GTFS), which Google use to import transit data, and you could have
your software export your schedule directly to GTFS.
As you're in Ireland, another approach would be an export in the
TransXChange format, which builds on the EU standard Transmodel.
TransXChange defines the exchange of transit data. I've written a tool
which translates TransXChange to the GTFS. See http://www.googletransitdatafeed.org
and download the tool at http://code.google.com/p/googletransitdatafeed/
I believe an export to TransXChange would be the preferred way, as it
opens the door to connect your service with that of other
transportation providers who also work with TransXChange. You also
open the door to other tools which build on the TransXChange.
Information about TransXChange at www.transxchange.org.uk

Adam:
We (Mapflow Ireland) are currently developing software/web service
that does all that... the basic software is free, although we haven't
figured out how to host it cheaply enough to offer the web service
completely for free... it is a spin-off of another project we are
working on for our commercial transport related work (we do a ton of
work for the governments of UK/London, Netherlands, Ireland, etc), and
so we figured we could provide it free...

The software allows you to import or enter via the web your
timetables, super fast, and it generates the GTFS files as part of
that. It also does trip planning, although it currently (this month)
only handles one transfer (which you may not need for your bus line,
anyway?)

It does a lot more as well, including showing maps, etc.

We haven't put it out to the public web yet, but if you're interested,
I can drop by sometime and you can see if it does what you need. (if
you could pick me up at the train station Thurles... I go to Dublin
from Cork at least once a week). I'd be interested in talking to you
(or someone at your company) anyway because we are interested in
trying to work with bus operators on another idea.
Best,
Sean
