Same station, multiple lines

Why is it that when there are multiple transit agencies that use one
station, there ends up being to different stations that show up on the
map? This can be seen with both Chicago Union station (Amtrak and
Metra) and New York Penn Station (Amtrak and MTA).

In the U.S., individual agencies are the originators of the data that
Google Transit uses. With each agency maintaining their stop
repositories separately, such overlapping points are not represented
in a way that Google Transit (or anybody else) could readily integrate
them a formal and efficient way.
