The "feature" where by Google Maps (GM) optimizes lines on save make
GM unusable for creating shapes. This feature tosses out "extra"
inflection points when it decides they are not needed to represent a
line. So, if you have a stop on a straight line you can no longer
insert an inflection point near the stop - GM will just trow it away
on the next save.
So, any of you who had been using MyMaps to create/edit shapes be on
notice that GM will mangle your lines before you can export them.

Thanks for pointing that out, Bob. I can't give you any guarantees
that it will be changed back in the future, but I have brought this
issue to the attention of the My Maps team.
