No, It has no effect on indexing and crawling per se.
You can add it either way, with or without the www.
What you do want to do is set the preferred domain
in the tools section.

You can also set up your site on your host to serve only one version
no matter which version is requested by using 301 permanent
redirection.

It is important that with whichever version you choose
is that you are consistent.
If you use absolute addressing in the site navigation
use only the preferred version.
Do the same with any submitted sitemaps.
