Our website is about orchids, so you would expect google to pick up on
that word, which it does, but the highlighted text is not the word
orchid but the letters - o, or -etc., a short distance away. see
http://orchid.org.uk or type keyword orchid or orchids

Is this a harmless anomaly, or could it affect ranking, and more
importantly is it our fault ??

Hello vandaman,

i don't see anything highlighted there?

http://209.85.135.104/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGL...

Did you search for something (like "orchids or flowers") and then
clicked to the cache-version from the SERP?

>>> or could it affect ranking

Imho: No!

No nothing is highlighted, sorry I should have explained a little more
thoroughly, if you do a search for orchid, the site will come up near
the top, but if you then click on the google cache, you will see that
google does not highlight the word orchid, but an odd letter or so.
similarly if you search for orchids

I to doubt it would affect ranking, but I am curious as to why ??

It's a harmless bit of anomaly most likely related to a clash between
your  css and the highlighting script css.
Don't worry about it, it's just annoying, that's all.

Maybe you can fix the css errors and warnings:
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile=css2&warning=2&u...

While you are at it, also html errors (homepage and other pages as
well):
http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http://www.orchid.org.uk/

Maybe with properly fixed pages the next time they get cached
highlighting may be OK.
No guarantee, of course.
But it won't be a wasted effort.

Hi Vandaman and welcome to the groups!
This shouldn't be affecting your site's ranking, but thanks for
reporting it, I'll pass it on!

John
