The WSDL from Google states they are using 2001/XMLSchema, but their
responses are 1999/XMLSchema. Is a deviation like this allowed by the
the WSDL standard? That seems to defeat the purpose of having the WSDL
file in the first place.

BTW, I just saw the notice that Google is no longer supporting their
SOAP interface and suggest you use the AJAX interface instead.
