No more Google search access from non-web applications? No more SOAP API keys?

Can somebody please confirm that Google essentially shut down their
search to people who would like to submit searches from their
applications? This was what the now discontinued SOAP api allowed to
do, but it seems this is explicitly not allowed with the AJAX API.

Can you maybe point out other search providers who still allow this?
Are there others affected by Google shutting down the SOAP API and how
do you deal with this?
I am a researcher and not interested to use the SOAP API for any
profit, but it is a pity that this is not supported at all any more.

What a pity.
AJAX API doesn't allow me to use it in non-web apps.
