Subject: Inconsistent network
My connection has been very spotty recently, and I had a couple of
questions to try to help diagnose my problem.  I am connected to the
node at 1200 Marilyn Dr. and have used this node for many years.  The
node is in my front yard and my wifi modem (a Ruckus) is located near
the window in my front room, so I consistently get SNR values in the
high twenties.  I have the Ruckus connected to a Linksys WRT54GL
wireless router with Tomato firmware.

Recently, I have had a very inconsistent connection.  I have trouble
getting updates of any kind, such as updates for the PS3, or Apple
software updates.  The update will start and then inevitably drop
halfway through the download.  On nights like tonight the network is
barely usable, with connectivity coming and going.  I had to wait 30
seconds just to load the Wifi help center.

When I go to

http://192.168.168.168/client.pl

to check the connection status, I get very inconsistent readings.  The
SNR is fairly consistent, anywhere from 20-31 or so.  Right now, the
uplink rate is listed as 1 Mbps, and downlink is listed at 48.  When I
refresh that page,it jumps to 36 Mbps downlink and uplink.  When I
refresh again it goes to 11 uplink and 2 downlink.  Is it typical to
have these kinds of wild fluctuations?  Granted, it is raining right
now, but this kind of thing is typical regardless of the weather.  I
have no idea if the weather makes any difference anyway.  The
consistency of the network has been very spotty for me the past six
months - so much so that I am strongly considering getting a cable
modem instead.  Is there anything I can do to improve my situation?
Is there a chance that my router is the primary culprit?

Thanks for your help,

Drew

Incidentally, I just tested the connection by running the ethernet
directly from the Ruckus to my laptop, and the quality was not any
better, so it appears it's a network issue and not a problem with my
router.  It just seems odd to me that I am having so much trouble
while I consistently get an SNR near 30.
