Subject: Being unavailable for two weeks
During the period of August 6 - 19 I won't be available, as I will be
doing volunteer work. As such, if I were to join the Summer of Code, I
wouldn't be able to do any work during that period. Is this a problem?

Can I still apply, or does this make it impossible to participate
sufficiently?

Chat to the org about it - they're likely to be fine with it.

I suppose I should have checked earlier, but it turns out my holiday period
doesn't even come close to matching the period GSoC happens. It starts over
a month later and begins again only a little later. As it turns out, it
doesn't really matter what other plans I have for the period after all.

Damn you Americans and your long holidays!

You can surely apply. This is not a big issue. Just discuss this with the
organization in which you are going apply and set your milestones
accordingly.

Hi Evaldas,

Again - talk to the org you are applying to.

Good luck!

Being able to work on it full-time for a period half as long as the
supposed period isn't a problem? I mean, I can work on it before and
after, but not full time and as such, I will still be quite a bit away
from the hours others would be able to put into this. Really, this
doesn't sound like much of a basis to apply from to me...

Thanks,

Jasper

My org isn't taking part this year, but in previous years we have accepted people in this situation.

If your proposal is good enough, you're up-front about what limits there are on your time and what you're going to do to make sure that you make up for them as best you can, then sure.

Things like committing to be online for regular status meetings even if you aren't putting much work in, so it's clear that you're thinking about the project and working on it somehow.  What we want is passionate people who are putting in as much time as they can, if that's less than full time for you because of uni then so be it.  Talk to the orgs you want to apply for to see their opinion.

Matt
