Hello everyone,
Each year, we have a meeting in IRC where we make sure that no student
has been accepted by more than one organization. This year, we will
be meeting on Friday, 18 April from 11:00 - 13:00 Pacific / 18:00 -
20:00 UTC in #duplicate-resolution on Freenode. This channel is
already open if you'd like to begin using it to help resolve any
duplicate likely to be accepted students.
This information has also been updated on the program calendar linked
from the FAQ:
http://code.google.com/opensource/gsoc/2008/faqs.html#0.1_timeline
No, the FAQ text has not been updated. We will likely not get around
to that for a while.
Some questions I anticipate:
1) I don't think we have any students that are likely to be accepted
by multiple organizations. Do I still have to come to this meeting?
No, but keep in mind that during resolution of duplicate accepted
students new duplicates crop up. If you aren't in the meeting, you
risk losing one of your students to a different organization.
2) Org A and Org B are both likely to accept a student. What happens
when Org A 'gets' the student?
Org B should mod down the proposal for the student who has now gone to
Org A. Org B will then take the "next" student on their list.
3) What if we don't use IRC?
Please make use of IRC for this meeting, it's the best tool we have.
Someone in your community should have basic familiarity with it. You
can also send mail to me off-list if you end up with a duplicate
likely to be accepted student and you haven't been able to resolve it
on your own, but again it is *best* to be at the meeting. Failure to
be there means your student will go to the other org by default in the
case of duplicate acceptance.
Google's program admins will be making the final call in cases where
organizations cannot decide where the student should end up.
If there are any questions, I am available on IRC or by email.
Cheers,
LH
