tonx: your only option seems to be:

1) create a new tag for your market research items
2) mark all of your shared items with that tag
3) make the tag "public" (this is different from your "shared" items)
4) send all your research contacts the "public" URL for the research
tag
5) unshare all the items in your old "shared items".

This will be the least painful for your contacts and for you, although
there's no guarantee that Google won't decide to publish that
particular collection of items right on their home page.  It seems
clear that by making things "public" by any definition, you are giving
Google the option of choosing to publish it for you, to whomever they
want (including your own contacts).
