Please either allow us to turn it off or get rid of it. Reader is not
a social networking application, it's a reading tool. I don't care to
know whether others like a particularly item or not. This is not
Digg. (I can see it coming now ... "Like" wars.)
If you want a technical reason, how about ... It uses too much screen
real estate when an item is "liked."

I couldn't care less who likes any of the article I'm reading. It's
like I'm reading the newspaper and there's some annoying drunk guy
yelling anytime he 'likes' what he sees. Even worse, we can't opt out
of it.
And then they went and did it to the iphone app, where space is
already quite limited. Also, no way to opt out of it.
What a worthless 'feature'. Maybe some like it, but the rest of us
want it to go away.
This isn't facebook. This is the tool I use to read during my morning
coffee.

Yeah, coundn't they have just merged this feature with 'starring'?
Can't say I hate the 'like' feature yet, I'd wager someone handy with
greasemonkey will have come up with a script to hide the button by
next week
people who like it probably don't feel compelled to come register on
the discussion forum to talk about it - they're just using it.
That said, I also found my way here trying to figure out how to make
this ugly little smiley faces go away and stop telling me what total
strangers think of my blog feeds.
I spend zero time on Facebook, less on Twitter. I spend many hours
here. For the most part, this is because Google (GMail excepted,
naturally) has been one place where people basically LEAVE ME THE F*
ALONE.
Now my GReader is growing all kinds of REALLY UNWELCOME garbage like how many STRANGERS liked a story... everyone I know wants to FOLLOW
me... and want me to FOLLOW them... and then *I* have to be the bad
guy and explain to them that I don't read blogs for the social
activity... WTF? Facebook? Twitter? Nope, this is Google. Supposed
to be, anyway.
This stuff needs to grow an OFF SWITCH. NOW please!

However, since the trend seems to be toward more and more "social"
features, perhaps this would be a good time to implement a global
"private" switch that hides all those features--the liking, sharing,
following, 'friends', etc. You know, private mode, misanthrope UI
(MUI, pronounced "me") mode, bathroom mode, or whatever.
But how nice to come here and find so many fellow anti-social types. I
like this.

I also hate the 'like' feature. I don't mind that it exists but its
very very distracting as its at the top and I just want to be able to
get rid of it without resorting to Firefox extensions. That said, I
will use the firefox extension on my home browser as I hate the like feature so much. Put things like this at the bottom and provide an off
feature for features that are matters of preference.
Actually, the like feature is useless. I find the must mundane
articles are liked and what do I care if a bunch of strangers like an
article or not?
Now get to work on the 'read later' button (at the bottom and make it
opt-in for those that want it).
It ads great value to me and many others who are already using it a
lot. With such a feature, Google Reader comes back in actuality.
I believe it can be ignored easily and, thus, doesn't need to be opt
out. Why would you expect to like EVERY FEATURE of a service?
