On behalf of the Google Reader Team, I'm happy to announce that we've
just added some exciting new features to Google Reader that will help
you better share what you're interested in on the web! Among them are:
"Share items with a note"
Ever wish you could explain to your friends why you're sharing a
particular item? Now you can post a note to accompany any item you
share! Just click the "Share with note" button, located conveniently
next to your old friend, the regular "Share" button. :)
"Share anything with a bookmarklet"
Ever found something on the web you wished you could share through
Reader only to find that the site in question doesn't offer a relevant
RSS feed? Fear not! Click on the "Notes" section in your sidebar.
Next, drag the "Note in Reader" link to your browser's toolbar. The
link will magically transform into a bookmarklet. From now on,
whenever you'd like to share anything you come across on the web,
whether it has an RSS feed or not, just click the "Note in Reader"
bookmarklet and a pop-up window will appear with sharing options. Try
it out!
"Add a note"
By clicking on the new "Notes" link in your sidebar, you'll be able to
write a standalone item either for your own reference or to appear in
your Shared items!
There's a few other new improvements, too! Head over to the Official
Google Reader Blog for more information!
I'd also like to thank you, the passionate users of Google Reader who
make up this discussion group, for helping make these features
possible. You have been diligently suggesting many of these features
for some time and your keen insight into what makes Reader great and
what could make it better plays no small role in determining the
present and future direction of Google Reader.
Please feel free to post your thoughts, findings, concerns and
(hopefully) praise regarding these new features to this thread. The
Reader Team is eager to hear what you think!
It's awesome!
People have been asking for this for a while, and it's come true. To
me, it's nifty. I have my blog pick up my shared items, and being able
to comment directly on them is pretty awesome.
Two comments:
Being able to tag notes as we post them, after clicking "note in
reader" would be pretty cool.
There is no way to "unnote" something, or at least not as far as I can
tell. What if I made a typo, or don't need it to be noted anymore, or
indeed noted the wrong thing?
Anyways, good stuff chaps. Reader is poised to take over even more of
my life/internets.

Yup, I also like the new noting, but also think the option should be
there to unnote something. Also, you can "add a note" to other items,
but can't "add a note" to previously noted items. And also, when you
note youtube videos the video itself doesn't get noted! (at least the
one i tried - meanwhile, when you note a video from google video
search, the video does get noted, but automatically starts to play
when you go to the notes page, which is a bit annoying!). Whatever,
still a great new feature, thanks.

Like Phill MV, I'd like to remove and edit my notes. (Perhaps there's
already a way to do this, and I missed it?)
Also, is there a way to share pages without the bookmarklet? For
example, a form where I could enter a URL and hit Submit? It's a low
priority, but it would be useful if I'm on a public computer with a
browser that doesn't allow me to add bookmarks.

I have wanted to use this as a filing mechanism for interesting pages
I find but don't have the time to read now.
The only thing that seems to be missing for me is I would like to have
Notes start as "unread" like all other feed items, have them show up
in the "All Items" list and allow me to mark them as read as I read
them.
The ability to delete noted items or modify them is not high on my
list, but I'm sure I would use that as well if it were available.
I came here to see how to delete a note. Glad I'm not the only one.
I was testing all of the different things I could do but I don't want
to keep them. Cool feature though.
This new feature is cool, but I'm interested in how this integrates
with Google's Shared Stuff that was released about 6 mths ago. (http://
www.google.com/s2/sharing/stuff?user=105393083628412021020) I know
you can't add notes to the Shared Stuff, but isn't it pretty much the
same thing otherwise?
Shared Stuff seems to have been made redundant with this new feature
in Reader. Seems to me like there's not a lot of integration/
communication between Google's Services yet.

Okay... let me make a disclaimer up front that I LOVE everything about
Google Reader. I'm an evangelist for it. I love the new beefed up
sharing.
However....
As cool as this is, isn't this just the new improved "Forward"
button? I woke up in a cold sweat a little while ago as I realized
that, now, people don't have to even take the effort to create a new
email and hit "forward to all" anymore. They see a stupid LOLcat
picture, and they just need to hit one button, and suddenly it's
showing up in my Google Reader. "Oh, isn't this the most heartwarming
story about a little girl who wrote to a soldier in Iraq? Let me
share it with everyone!" CLICK. "This sure is a silly video of a
monkey! I just know everyone would like to see this!" CLICK.
Granted, my mom, and my sister-in-law aren't computer-savvy enough yet
to even use Reader to be able to cause this kind of damage, but it's
only a matter of time. Google keeps making these programs cooler and
cooler, and easier and easier to use. The countdown to when my mom
has Google Reader has begun.
What can be done to stop this?
(on a serious note, outside of making someone not my Friend anymore
and hurting their feelings, how do I filter out shared items from
them, or shared items from certain websites, or shared items about
certain topics?)
I love it. it's awesome... but it feels so much like a blog that it
seems this should be a full blog. Possibly built in to blogger... or
part of the google profile page. Come on google! In or Out... we're at
war!

Excellent function. Thank you guys.
I found one problem when i take the notes.
if a link address in note is written in following form "/aa/bb.html",
not the absolute address, the new address appears to be wrong in
Reader

Share with Note is great, truly useful and much easier than emailing.
I would like to be able to edit and delete the notes too.
I would also like to be able to change the tags as I Share with Notes
- I have several shared tags/folders and being able to share and tag
in the same step would be better - If I forget to change the tag
before I Share With Note then I'm stuck.

Good work, Reader team, I like the new features.
I have 2 problems:
1. The edit/delete note feature would be welcome. It has been already
mentioned here a couple of times.
2. The sharing through "Share" button is problematic with some
codepages with diacritic. You can see garbled characters in a post on
my public page http://www.google.com/reader/shared/11683151097148199511

I share things out a little different, rather than the "share" link, I
just "tag" it with my friends name. I then make that tag public and
give them the public link to it, for the HTML or feed. This allows me
to tag different articles for different friends and my wife. Can I
"tag items with a note"? I don't see that option. That would be
great to do! The share is a great feature, but it allows you to share
everything with everyone, sometimes there are things I want to share
with friends that my wife wouldn't care about.

Worse things happen, when you make a note to an item. Next time you
see, that the item is shared, but you cannot see it has a note. You
will click on "share with note" and you will end up with 2 items in
your shared stuff with 2 different comments. Not too good...
Well, my workflow with tagging:
I would prefer my stuff can have folders (or tags, or whatever). Well,
like a blog, each post can have a tag.
I use reader to read tons of items, and share them. But of course I
don't want to share geek things with my grandma. I read funny things
in fun folder, geek things under tech folder... So when I hit share, I
would like to share under a certain tag. To make a step further, it is
rule based.
When I have an item in my tech folder and hit share, I would have the
item shared under "tech" tag.
Is it possible now?
Or is it going to be possible?

Well, I think it's pretty nifty, sort of carries the torch for (the
pretty much stale) Google Notebook, etc., but there are two things
that I would find vastly more useful for actual feed reading than
annotated sharing:
1) Filtering
PLEASE add filtering of some sort to Google Reader - I am now doing my
own Bayesian filtering of stuff outside of it and hacking stuff
together with Yahoo Pipes, and it's vastly more efficient than Reader
by itself.
2) Accepting and propagating tags as <category> fields in RSS/Atom
The current tagging mechanism is useless if you want to integrate it
with anything else - not only does Google Reader not respect incoming
tags in RSS feeds, it also does not propagate tags on shared/public
feeds.
If these two things were fixed, tagging/annotating and sharing would
be much more efficient in many regards.
Until they aren't, well, I'll try to work around them as is.
This is great - thanks, Team. Here's my suggestion: I would love to
see this functionality combined in some way with your Bookmarks &
Notebook to be able to cache the actual pages in our Reader account.
Not sure, but I imagine that as a page "disappears" off a site it's
gone forever except for the note. Lots of people used Notebook to
"save" web pages but it would be nice to be able to do that here.
Can you port the spanking new and beautiful notes function over to
starred items too? I don't like to share most things for fear casual
acquaintances will be turned off by my penchant for the NSFW, but I
star items regularly to be able to share things with people I
explicitly invite to view them and avoid the automated sharing with my
contacts. I've been dreaming of something like the notes functionality
since I switched over from Bloglines (which had similar functionality)
and would love to be able to add notes to my starred items. I
especially love the being able to note ANYTHING on the web aspect, but
would rather be able to have them show up in my starred items rather
than my shared ones...

Love the new feature. A few requests, to embiggen the product:
* Mobile notes! I spend 3 hours on a train every day (don't ask) and
most of that time is spent in Reader on the iPhone. I'd love a way to
add notes on the go.
* E-mail notes! I don't have bookmarklet capability on the go, but I
can e-mail myself a URL. It would be nice to add e-mail noting just
like Blogger does.
* Separate notes feed! I'd love to help my (meager) reblog audience
distinguish between simple reblogs and links with notes.
