The short description of it is this: If any of your friends from
Google Talk are using Reader and sharing items, you'll see them listed
in your sidebar under "Friends' shared items." Similarly, they'll be
able to see any items you're sharing. You can hide items from any
friend you don't want to see, and you can also opt out of sharing by
removing all your shared items. For full details, check out the
following help articles:

This is still a very experimental feature, so we'd love to hear what
you think of it. Thanks, and happy sharing!
Don't you think there might be a method of being selective with what
you share that might be slightly more fine grained than, you know,
deleting our shared items en masse? This is the worst "feature" you
have ever introduced. For further details as to why I am currently
extremely annoyed, please see my earlier post here -

but in google talk, there is nothing to remind me that there is a new
shared item from friends yet,
just using the contacts of gt?
google talk has not been updated for long...
I couldn't agree more. Now every one of my gmail contacts can see
all of my shared items? There should be an "opt in" option where me
and my friend mutually agree that we want to share with each other.
Otherwise, I'm not going to feel comfortable tagging items.
This is BY FAR the worst feature ever added by google.

I think the basic mistake here, as Modulo has noted, is that the
people on my contact list are not necessarily my "friends". I have
business contacts, school contacts, family contacts, etc., and not
only do I not really have any interest in seeing all of their feed
information, I don't want them seeing mine either. This is a major
privacy problem.
Furthermore, the only option I have on the friends page is whether or
not I want to invite someone to Gmail. If I want to remove them from
my friends list, I have to *delete the contact*. That's absurd. The
options for removing shared feeds are akin to using a mallet to squash
a gnat. Not very well thought out.
I don't need Gmail to become a social networking tool. If I wanted
that, I'd sign up for Facebook, Orkut, or whatever. I want it to do e-
mail, feeds, docs, etc., and I want it to *respect my privacy*. :P

I overlooked it when the Trends were added but at least it was just
one line that time...stop stealing my real estate! There isn't that
much room on the left side for my tags and now yet another thing I'll
rarely (if ever) use is over there. Now I have to get rid of 2 tags so
they'll all fit on my laptop screen again :(

1) Using my Gmail contacts as a friends list is a dangerous thing.
Especially because a lot of the addressed in there were added
automatically when people emailed me. I understand that sharing is a
public activity, but to date google reader shares were pseudo private
by obscurity. In reality the only people that were going to see my
share were people I told about it. I don't like the idea of an opt out
only mechanism. Facebook just took a bath on this concept. Granted
Beacon was a complete disaster, but I think the lesson to be learned
is when you change personal sharing to become more public it should be
an opt in process.
2) As for the value of the share feature, it would be great if it
incorporated other sources. At present this model assumes that
everything I'd want to share I would have read and shared through a
feed I've subscribed to in google reader and then marked share in
google reader. What if what I want to share isnt available in an RSS
feed? What if what I want to share is part of a feed but not one I
want to subscribe to? Google already has another share tool that
allows for comments, its a bit primitive but with a little work they'd
make a good combination.
3) It would probably be good to combine the google reader share with
the other google share AND then let people add feeds from other
locations as well.

How do I turn this off? Do I need to unsubscribe from all my feeds?
I do *NOT* want colleagues seeing my personal feeds. Unless I'm
misunderstanding something here, I have to stop using Google Reader.

Are there any plans to integrate Google Reader with Google Apps
anytime soon?
Currently I have to keep a separate gmail account just to be able to
use gmail and with this new feature (very cool btw) I now have to
start syncing contacts too...

This is a terrible idea, and a violation of privacy, and it
contradicts your own documentation -
"Like any regular web page, your public page is viewable by anyone who
knows its address. Send the link to your friends and family, and
they'll be able to read what you've recommended. They can bookmark
your page in their browsers for easy access, and they can even
subscribe to it in Google Reader."
http://www.google.com/support/reader/bin/answer.py?answer=69989&topic...
Now, they are viewable by anyone who has ever sent me an email and
been automatically added to my contacts list. This should be opt-in
only, and now it is automatic. If I wanted all of my contacts to see
my shared items, I would send them a link to my "public" shared page.
Your own practices of obfuscating the URL of the "publicly" available
page of shared items, and of choosing not to index that page for
general Google web searches both show that these shared items are not
meant to be shared without some additional effort by the user. This
new feature goes against that spirit without opportunity for the user
to make that decision for themselves.
Did you guys not see the reaction that Facebook's new sharing features
got recently? Please don't turn the best feed reader on the web into
the shittiest social network on the web.
I want this turned off and like, now. Now my business associates, my
family, my parents can all see my shared feeds and I have no control
over that at all. I WAS using the shared feed for myself as a way to
backup important RSS feeds, not to share with people I hardly know who
happen to be in my address book. This is an awful, awful feature, an
invasion of privacy and a feature that no one wanted in the first
place. If we did, we'd share the link! I want a way to turn this off
immediately.

I totally agree with everything you guys have been saying. It's just
common sense, you don't want everybody you have ever emailed to be
able to see your shared items! I'm going to stop using Google Reader
if they don't fix this SOON.

I think this is awesome. If you're sharing an RSS item to a public
page, I think it's a forgone conclusion that you don't mind it being
seen by other people who are using RSS & Google Reader. Then again, I
am s "social" bookmarker, and not everyone may feel that way. Social
Feeds is awesome concept/ feature in any case!!

Our problem with the feature isn't the feature itself, but that they
automatically changed from an opt-in feature to an opt-out feature
that you can't disable. Therefore, the privacy we assumed we had is
gone in a blink of an eye, and there's no way to change that.

Violation of privacy? Everything you share has ALWAYS been public via
your Reader RSS feed. What is being done now is broadcasting it more
obviously (the obfuscation of the RSS feed and public page address
are
no longer guarding your privacy...thinly best before). The goal here
on Google's part is to get more people using Reader, so they can show
more ads, and generate more money, to give us more free services.
You can turn off having all of your contacts see your shared items;
it's a Talk setting that makes it so only your approved IM list can
see it (yes, still your entire IM list, but NOT your entire contacts
list). But despite the extra publicity it's getting, it is no more or
less "private" than it was via the existing RSS feed to your share
items modulo "security by obscurity," and if you really think that
provides you good security, well...
There are plenty of other issues with the feature to complain about,
though. Here's one: http://jeff.henshaw.org/?p=150 that's driving me
nuts already.

Great idea, under-executed. I second all of the complaints so far in
the thread, but I'd like to point out that I have been begging for a
more social Google Reader. Just not quite like this...
What I really want is the ability to start a "Discussion" with one or
more contacts or contact groups. The first post in the discussion
should be the article and each of the people invited to the discussion
should see this discussion on the list of things I have shared with
them.
Why do I want this?
Right now, I have a highly indiscriminate share list. There are 5
people (that I know of) subscribed to my shares. Three are programmers
or other high-tech geeks. The other two just share everyone's love of
web comics. For web comics, I'd like to be able to click "Share". The
default selection should be "with everyone". Then click OK. For nerdy
programming articles, I want to click "Share", then select "with the
following contacts", and type "Geeks" with auto complete like email. I
do not want my two non-geek friends being flooded with these articles.
The problem now is that email does what I want, except it sends an
email. Emails are disruptive. Your Inbox is where you go when you have
work to do. Reader is where you go when you have time to kill. I feel
like I am disturbing people when I email them, so I do it less often
and my friends miss cool stuff as a result.

I do not want to share my reader shares with everyone in my Talk list.
Period. If I cannot choose who to share with specifically, this
feature has just been totally disabled for me and I will have to
either stop using Google Talk or stop Google Reader. Seriously.
Why on earth would you all assume that everyone's list of people they
IM with would be exactly the same as the list of people they'd like to
regularly share Reader items with?
Please fix this and let us OPT IN to who we want to share with.
PLEASE. Don't make me leave my Google apps!!
So if im not mistaken anyone on my chat list can see anything i put in
my shared list? If that is true that needs to be changed I share feeds
with friends but some items I do not want to share with all the people
I chat with. I like the idea but I think we should have the option to
add someone instead of removing people from contacts or chat thats
kind of harsh. Maybe a list of all your contacts and you click on who
you want to add to the ok to see shared items or maybe by folder. So
each folder sees your contact list and you can check this person to
see this group that person to see that group of feeds etc. etc.. but I
do agree this needs to get changed.

I have 5 "Kate" on my invite list, how can I choose the right one,
without knowing their e-mail address? This feature will be great, if
you'll redesign the settings interface, at least the invite section. I
don't care about any other privacy options, but I would like to see a
more advanced sharing settings than this one now.
