Today we're extremely proud to announce commenting with Google Reader!
This has by far been the most requested feature for Google Reader and
today we're excited to bring you a feature that we believe will make
sharing and reading via Google Reader a lot more social, and a lot
more fun. Just click "Add comment" underneath any shared item. You can
comment on any item from either your own Shared Items feed or from
your Friends' Shared Items. Comments are only visible to friends of
the person who originally shared the item.
Please feel free to post your reactions to commenting with Google
Reader on this thread. In doing so, please keep in mind that this is
just an initial foray into making Reader a more social and fun
product. We definitely expect to make changes in the coming weeks and
months based on your experience and thoughts (and a few ideas of our
own), so feel free to share your suggestions with the knowledge that,
as always, this implementation is not set it stone but rather
continually evolving.
Thanks so much to all of you for using Google Reader and helping make
it better with your thoughtful feedback and suggestions.

Erm. Seriously? Besides *filters*? Support for password-protected
feeds? Warnings about feed dupes when importing? Tagging functionality
on the iPhone? Bayesian classification of feed items into categories?
Customizable shared items pages? (just to name a few).

If that (rather than improving the reading experience) is the new
focus, dialogue would best be displayed on a collapsible sidebar next
to the item (possibly triggered by a hotkey). Visiting a separate
entry in the tree is cumbersome...

I have been using Google Reader for nearly a month now and I really
like it.
I would like to share the things I do in Google Reader the most and
also offer some suggestions.
The one I frequently do in Google Reader is to "tag" (either by
placing a star or tag it) interesting articles that I come across
through my feeds. Things I tag are usually guides that I feel might
help me in the future when the need arises. I refuse to bookmark this
article simply because my bookmark list is already so huge and the
fact it only resides on my computer, if my computer goes boink, so
will the bookmarks. Tagging articles in Google Reader keeps it in the
cloud and its safe.
So like right now, I have nearly 10-20 tags. I tried searching for a
few articles I had tagged before in Google Reader, but it didn't quite
give me the results I wanted.
Suggestion 1: Search for tagged articles in Google Reader be improve
I don't like reading articles in the 'All Items' tab simply because I
find it difficult to distinguish where did the articles originate
from, however I like its simplicity for allowing me to read everything
without having to click multiple tabs.
Suggestion 2: Provide more options to distinguish articles in the 'All
Items' tab. For example, in expanded view, articles from engadget.com
have light-orange frame and so forth. Or maybe allow us to color-code
the titles. (I would prefer color-coding the frame though).
I hope my post receives the necessary consideration from your team.
I had just posted a huge rant on my blog about GR's lack of this
feature. Way to take the wind out of my sails! Seriously though,
good job.
As already stated, timestamps would be nice.
Also, is there a way to be notified of new comment activity? I think
having them show up in the All Items view is a bad idea (since
conversations that I'm not interested in would quickly get annoying),
but there should be some visual indication that there are comments I
haven't seen yet on items shared by me (or my friends).

Oh happy day!!!! I've been talking about this feature among friends
for about a year now (or whenever notes were first added)
This is going to be such a great feature that I'm going to use every
day! Thank you google!

A thought: for an article shared by a friend, I have two choices:
1. Re-share it and widen its audience.
2. Comment on it and keep its audience the same.
Often, I want to do both. I really just want to comment, but I'd like
new people to see it.
Perhaps you have some clever solutions for that dilemma? The most
straightforward is a "comment and widen audience" button (with a
better name of course) that does both. Not sure how people would feel
about having their comments shared with a wider audience.
If commented items are to show up again on the "All Items" page when
they have new comments (and I hope they do soon), then I hope that you
also include a check box for each item marked "do not show this item
again" for discussions you don't want to follow. Perhaps also the
option to set it so that that check box is checked by default, and be
able to "uncheck" it for individual items.
ie. When people comment on shared items, they show up again on your
"All Items" page (maybe with a number beside them indicating either
the total number of comments, or the number of new comments, or both)
but they have a new check box at the bottom which you can check to not
receive anymore updates about comments on that item.

ok. that is nice.
but I still want to see the comments of the original post. that one
you just can see if you go to the page. it takes you out of the
reader. why i just can't pass my mouse over the word comments and see
what is going on? and comment, as well.

If some kinds of commenting sync mechanism implemented between GR and
popular blog system (e.g. wordpress, blogger, etc). It would be much
appreciated.
Or, maybe a commenting sync protocol is much better?

I like the whole idea behind this feature. It's just another element
of Google's social networking arsenal.
However, there are two things I don't like about it. Firstly, I
disagree that we should be allowed to edit our comments. That can
lead to disagreements about what was actually said should people
change what they wrote.
I also do not like the fact that there are no timestamps on the
comments. This is poor design. To know when someone made a comment
can be at times crucial.
This may also be going over the top, but how about linking GReader
into Google Latitude so you can tell where someone was when they
shared an item or commented on an item?

Unfortunately the very limited scope of this feature (sharing only
with friends) makes it useless for me. I would rather like something
like the "Feed Flare" provided by Feedburned which displays the number
of comments on the blog and provides you link to comment on the blog.
Also, from an interface point of view, the delayed loading is
annoying, because it makes the bottom of the post "jump" when it loads.
Excellent !! Can I assume you are working on new comment notifications
and to improve the view / navigation in comment view.. coz long posts
with long comment discussions would require quite a bit of scroll..
personally i would like - click '+' to expand view kind of
navigation...
