Okay, I just tried the beta of the iPhone Reader, and rather than fix
the single biggest flaw, you've created a different version of the
problem! Let me explain...
In the current (non-beta) version of the mobile Reader, links to
external pages get converted to a mobile version. Sometimes this is
great, like if I'm using EDGE, or am just in a hurry. But sometimes,
depending on the page, I want to see the original version. To do this,
I have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to find
the link to the original. Why is there not a link at the TOP of the
page?
The beta iPhone Reader has the opposite problem...it always loads the
full HTML original version. This is completely unusable over EDGE! And
as far as I can see, there's no way at all to see the mobile digested
version instead, not even the preference that used to be there.
Please, please, please provide an easy way to dynamically choose how
you view a page. Just put a link to the full HTML at the top of the
mobile page. Or give us two different links on the reading view, one
for the digested version and one for the original.
Yes, please, fix it!!! I used to spend 90% of time on my iPhone on
Google Reader because I could access almost every news feed on EDGE,
but now I can't do it anymore!!! At least add an option to the new
iPhone interface so we can revert back to the old www.google.com/reader/m version. I think a lot of people will be in the same situation as we
are... BTW, thanks for the great work!!

I completely agree with the previous posts. I really like the mobile
google reader, but the loss of the mobile formatting is a HUGE
hindrance when on a slower (EDGE) internet connection.
The mobile formatting is so useful that I added its URL prefix to a
whole bunch of sites I visit regularly on my phone.
Please, please bring it back to the mobile reader!

I did the same thing with URL prefixes myself- it's a great technique!
For those not familiar with it, it works like this- replace the x's
below with a URL, and you'll get a mobile-friendly version of that
page- no graphics, plus normalized text- courtesy of Google:
I know. Google has ruined my mobile experience by taking this
away!!!! I don't even want to use my phone now. It was the only way
to browse the web on slow cellular (which is just about all cellular).
Even on Wi-Fi full pages take so longer. I loved the mobile
formatting!

I just joined this group specifically to comment on this issue.
Without at least the option to use mobile formatting, Google has
neutered Reader on the iPhone. If Google is stubborn about this,
perhaps someone could write a native iPhone app which acts as an
intermediary and feeds the "show original" request through GWT (or
gives the user a choice of which incarnation of the article to load)?
The new interface is beautiful, but the functionality has taken a
nosedive.

Honestly complaining about a free service doesn't exaclty seem right
but then again Google does make its revenue from its ad cash cow which
is feed by consumers using Google tools. So instead of simple
expressing a complaint about the Beta Mobile Reader replacing the
XHTML version I will make several suggestions to improve your product.
1) For a quick fix please allow users to access a fully functional
XHTML reader.
2) Allow an option to open each link as either "High" (Safari full
fornatted URLs) or "Low" (XHTML mobile formatted) w bandwidth.
3) In the XTML version I used to be able to book mark the URL string
to a specific Tag, Group or Feed. I have a full folder full of useless
bookmarks now. This allowed me to efficient and easily access the
content I needed. Please I realize the idea is to make all iPhone
activity function entirely with the iGoogle framework but this simply
is too inefficient for a browser as limited as the iPhone Safari
browser. It can hardly handle typing this message.
4) Create an option to dynamicly load feeds like in the new reader or
to load them page by page. Since the Safari browser has about no
capcity to cache anything and handles like a child it us very buggy
with larger feeds. Breaking the feeds up page by page allows Safari to
catch its breath as it were.

I'm typing this on a brand new 3G iPhone. I had been thinking, "Ok,
Google Reader yanked mobile formatting, but maybe that won't be such a
big deal, now that I have 3G..."
Let me tell you, it's still a big deal. The lack of mobile formatting
is killing me, even with 3G. Geez, this sucks. Google Reader had been
my most important mobile app for many months now- but its usability
for me has taken a huge hit.

Can't agree you guys more on this feature suggestion!!
Mobiled html version feature is absolutely my no.1 reason why i choose
google reader as the rss reader on my iphone.
Yeah, the new reader is cool, somewhere.now google has make it default
by replacing the old one. and we can't use the old one any more, no
matter how much we really love to.
Let's keep this post up together. and hopefully the Reader team will
reply it.
Until the iphone gets a faster processor and connection speed >3g/
wifi, we will all appreciate being able to view xhtml from the
reader.
Its nice to be able to see the REAL internet but its even better to
have a choice between the "kinda, sorta, internet" and real
internet.
For people on the go and with only EDGE coverage, being unable to
access the xhtml links destroys the user experience. What once was
awesome, now sucks. It doesn't matter how good the new ajax UI works
and feels, without xhtml google reader is just another run-of-the-mill
reader.
PLEASE bring back the mobiled html version!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to associate myself with this comment thread: I liked the old
iphone reader a lot better - it was faster, cleaner and most
importantly , links to all external pages were routed through the
wireless transcoder (gwt) which made the mobile web a lot faster and
easier to surf. PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD READER AS AN OPTION or at
least add gwt links to each post. Thanks.

Please let me know what other RSS readers are out there for the iPhone
that have both a) the three lines of preview text as Google's does and
b) the mobile formatting like Google's did (before they disabled the /
m version).

The only thing I could think of that would be better than this is if
they make a actual iPhone application that keeps Reader/i cached so it
doesn't disappear every time you follow an outgoing link. Of course
that would still leave out the GWT formatting, and it would mean you'd
have to close Safari each time you wanted to go back to Reader, but at
least it would solve one problem :D
I do appreciate the complexity and look of Reader/i but Reader/m on
EDGE was a godsend. Please bring it back Google.
