The world just got a little bit smaller. I'm happy to announce that
Google Earth is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch, allowing
you to fly to the far reaches of the world from the palm of your hand!
After you've tried it out, reply to this thread to tell us what you
think or report a bug so we can quickly see everyone's feedback in one
place.
Very nice I'm sure (been using Google Earth a lot on my iMac for a
long time ) - but yet AGAIN (as with the Google App) it is NOT
AVAILABLE at the Apple iTunes store where I live - Hong Kong, so we
are prevented from using either of them.
When others asked on this forum WHEN the Google App would be coming to
HK store, there was no reply, even after several months now. I would
really appreciate an official explanation from Google as to why they
have prevented us from using Google App on our iPhones in Hong Kong, &
now apparently wish to do the same with Google Earth.
If this is a language issue, then please bear in mind that Hong Kong
was a British Colony for over 150 years, has tens of thousands of
expat English speakers - British, Americans, Australians, Indians &
Nepalese & so on - living here (some families for several generations)
as well as hundreds of thousands of workers from Philippines,
Thailand, Indonesia & so on, who also do not read Chinese. The Chinese
here have had "9 years of free education" for decades (recently
changed to 12 years) usually with an English lesson every day for all
that time. Many of my Chinese friends & colleagues choose to use the
English versions of software on their computers (& read English
language newspapers & so on) despite Traditional Chinese editions
being available.
If Google were to stop preventing us from downloading the standard
Google App & Google Earth (in English), it would be very useful to the
vast majority here (regardless of whether a Traditional Chinese or
bilingual version would also be made available at some other date).
Could someone from Google please comment, & also please let us know
when & if the App & Google Earth may be available
Many thanks.

I hear your concerns about this app (and the Google Mobile App) not
being available in Hong Kong at the present time. When submitting
Google Earth to the App Store, the team was tasked with selecting
countries to which this App would be available. Apple's current method
for country selection lumped Hong Kong into a bucket with other
countries to whom we can't offer Google Earth due to legal reasons.
Therefore, we weren't able to provide the App to Hong Kong due to
Apple's locale restrictions. If you'd like, you can visit Apple's
Support website at www.apple.com/support to contact Apple about this
issue.
However, if you've authorized your iTunes and iPhone or iPod touch for
a country where the App is available, you should be able to install it
regardless of where you are physically. While this isn't an ideal
workaround, we do hope to roll out this App to as many locales as
possible in the coming months. I realize this is an inconvenience; I
can reassure you that we do hear you and we're working behind the
scenes to offer this App to whomever on Earth wants it (pun
intended ;)).

Google Earth and Google Mobile App are not availables in the
Argentinian Itunes Store also.
I don´t think there are legal reasons in this region.

Me again. When I change my country to USA for example I see Google's
applications but I'm not able to download any application because
credit card is invalid for that country.

I am pretty familiar with Google Earth. I don't yet own an iPhone --
and remain somewhat iGnorant of its general featuers.- but I am
intrigued by the release of Google Earth on that platform. If it
works as I would want it to, I would probably sign up.
But after reading everything I can about this product release -- I am
currently unable to view the YouTube video -- I find nothing about
what I consider part of Google Earth's core functionality: the ability
to read and display a user-supplied KML file.
Does this functionality exist in the iPhone iMplementation? Also, is
the full set of KML supported on pc platforms supported on the
iPhone?
Without such functionality, this would be pretty useless to me. If
the iPhone can read a user-supplied KML file, how is that file
imported? If that is only by an Internet URL link, that doesn't cut
it. I need to open a local file like I can in Google Earth on my
laptop, desktop or server.
I long since passed the point of being gaga just because the Google
application can show pretty pictures and base maps of the earth in
3D. I want ot see my own content. But all the gushy reporters
reviewing this release in the tech press seem pretty naive and give
little useful information in their publications.

Well, having visited an AT&T retail store, trying the Google Earth app
on an iPhone and talking to a knowledgeable salesman, I can answer my
own questions: This implementation of Google Earth lacks all the
capabilities I described above. In addition, it even omits the Roads
layer.
The result is a cool novelty, and it impresses those who have never
experienced Google Earth elsewhere. Flying around on it is quick and
fun. But I don't find it particularly useful as a tool for displaying
real information, which Google Earth on PC, Mac and Linux platforms
certainly is.
I don't know whether the crippling of this version is explained by
technical or business reasons. Perhaps this free app will be followed
by a premium version with more functionality, or perhaps Google is
saving the best for Android. Hopefully, the hardware and network of
the 3G phones are sufficient to support such a product.

Yeah. I agree. I have a huge need for this app to open KML and KMZ
files and it just won't get the job done. If they made it a real
tool, it would be the greatest handheld app ever.

Is Poland in such bucket too?
If so then why there is link on page http://earth.google.com/intl/pl/ to download Google Earth from App Store? As I understand i can't
legally get Google Earth from US App Store.

I couldn't agree more. I'm sure Android will either gt a "fuller"
version out of the gate, or upgrade at a faster pace. At the same
time I hope Google understands that there is a large iPhone community
out there that needs fuller functionality.
Is there a phone number/email address to get to the Google Earth team?

Well, I have the same situation as users like cybercat: Google Earth
is not available in my country, Brazil. I don't mind if it will come
in English, I want it anyway, but I can't now. Do you have any plans
to expand the availability of this app?
Thanks,

If you'd like to provide feedback to the team, this forum is the place
to do it! Please know that we're working behind the scenes to collect
and analyze much of the feedback we've been getting from people like
you. We're well aware of the passion of the iPhone community, and I
want to assure you that we haven't neglected you :)

I didn't mean to sound overly critical and I do apologize if I did
come off that way. I will say that if you guys continue to work on
this app to make it as fully functional as Google Earth Plus, you will
have a powerful business tool that will help leverage mass rollouts of
iPhones in the busienss community.
Thanks for the reply and get to work!!! lol

Version 0.1.414.559 does not function as advertised in Canada with
Rogers/Fido :(
Problem is that 1) when the app first starts up it asks if it can use
the present wifi network, 2) The home page shows the keyboard and no
amount of shaking or tapping on the mic will dismiss it, and 3) in the
"Settings" the option to turn Voice Search ON is missing> (There's
only Searchable items (Contacts, Previous searches, Websites),
Suggestions, SafeSearch, Clear History, Help and Discussion, Terms of
Service, Privacy Policy.)
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=115555&ctx=... sez: If you are using Google Mobile App outside of the US, and want to
enable Voice Search, tap the 'Settings' tab from the Google Mobile
App's homescreen, and then slide the Voice Search setting to 'ON.'
Something's obviously missing here.
Very disappointing and not up to usual Google standards. Here's hoping
for an early upgrade.
Incredible to have Google Earth on my iPhone, best thing so far for
showing off my phone and killing time when im bored at a restaurant or
something. Only downside is it seems to crash very frequently.
