Hi Google Maps API team, thanks for picking up that Google Maps Static API was displaying the excessive usage image and resolving.

Even the Google API page (http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap) was littered with the excessive usage images.

Downtime that I noticed was from 3:15AM until around 3:45AM UTC.

It’s a shame it went down (had me questioning what was wrong with our site for a bit), but glad it’s resolved.  Was the issue localised to a region or global?

Hopefully this info will help other API users, if they noticed (or their users reported) issues around this time and couldn't work out what it was.

Hi,

The API didn't go down - usage of this API without authentication is on an IP-address basis. So, you (or others on your network) were likely requesting more maps than usual.

Regards
Chris

Hi Chris,

Apologies for misunderstanding the usage.  Happy to admit when I’m wrong.

Seems I should have asked why it may be down for myself and other users at my office.  Did try on my mobile (off office network), and it worked, then refreshed page at office and it worked again, so hence though resolved at that time (timely coincidence).

So just confirming the usage limit is based on my IP (by this I mean sum of all usage for a given IP used to access the internet, e.g. proxy for all staff under a network I may be in)?  Is it also related to if a given site/application has made too many calls (this was how I originally understood the documentation)?

Thanks for any clarification.

Yes, IP based. Best to use a API key to get quota specifically for your application. You can generate one here:
