I downloaded and installed Google Maps for mobile Version 2.0.3 which
is compatible with Motorola-K1 on my mobile Motorola E398. Now maps
are loading properly.
The version 2.2.0, actually meant for and compatible with Motorola
E398, still does load properly, hangs and shows "Application error"
message.

Thank you all for providing such great suggestions and letting me know
what's going on with your devices! I'm planning on releasing another
update soon with answers to some of your questions.
A few notes in the meantime:
-Most Sony Ericsson memory issues should be solved with the 2.3.2
release. Glad to know that it's fixed for you, Rasmus.
-When downloading Google Maps for mobile, the interface automatically
detects your device and delivers the appropriate version. I'd
recommend trying to download Google Maps for mobile from your device's
native browser. This should send you the correct version for your
phone.
Please note: At this time, Google isn't providing previous versions of
Google Maps for mobile for download. If you're able to access a
website with previous versions, by all means feel free to download at
your own risk ;)
Best,
Tom

I used this method on my HTC Tytn II with Win6.1 and it gave me the
Java version (2.3.2) with no TouchScreen support. This makes it
impossible to use! Why no touch screen support?

I am using an old WM5 AT&T8125 w/bluetooth GPS dongle. All that works
fine, no sweat.
What I have run into though is interuption of service while in
transit. Like Waaaay out in the boonies. Lost in the woods. You
might work on a cache that will hold enough tiles to get around
without phoning home.
Other than that, I have no quibble or qualms. I enjoy the gmap. I
noticed there was a way newer version, and so I dropped in here
looking primarily for a new version announce thing I could get to
remind me about it.
Thanks for the map app. I enjoy virtual tripping while jacked into
the office WiFi. Too bad I cannot pack up an area then use it
"offline" while deployed on the ground.
Ahhh, completely forgot what I was doing in updates to begin with.
Regarding updating, and the currently new to me update. Should I
uninstall the previous version and re-install the newer version? Or,
will it suffice to run the newest download .CAB via Activesync 4.5
