Hi all, i installed the shiny new 3.5 on a new WINEPREFIX to try it
out. Most things work superb, only google maps do not show up. The
window is just empty. Wine_gecko 0.9.1 is installed and iexplore
http://maps.google.com works ok.

any ideas why? Before gecko installation the windows showed "cannot
display HTML". Now its just empty.

Some wine logs from that:

I assume you are referring to picasa 3.5??

It installs fine for me with: wine ./picasa35-setup.exe

?? google maps /= picasa ??

googleearth, linux package from google, works fine

The new picasa 3.5 is supposed to show a map (MSHTML windows from
http://maps.google.com) for easier geotagging without GoogleEarth.

On windows this works very nice, a new sidebar is show on the right
side with a map. On my linux, nothing :( Even though explorer
replacement wine_gecko shows the map on web without a problem.

> I assume you are referring to picasa 3.5??

yes

> ?? google maps /= picasa ??

With the new 3.5 picasa uses google maps from web utilising MSHTML
window. See http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=161869

> googleearth, linux package from google, works fine

not for geotagging

I'm very interested in getting geotagging to work under Ubuntu as
well. I experienced the same problem as you describe when I activated
the 'places' side panel. Actually Picasa ended up freezing and I had
to delete the line "active_metadata_tab"="thumbui/places_toggle" in /
home/USERNAME/.google/picasa/3.0/user.reg to get Picasa working again.

Please post any progress you make.

Thanks a lot for posting the workaround! Worked for me. I was just
about to give up on picasa on my linux machine.

i confirm the pb

Mandriva 2008.1
wine 1.1.29
windows picasa 3.6

there is a progess with the windows picasa 3.6 compared to Linux
picasa 3 :

now it does not delete metadata that it doesn't use when using manual
or automatical synchronizing feature
as for example : image direction but also altitude

thus now i only use windows picasa 3.6
