Comment reply ordering?

I am starting to get some interaction on a niche site on which I have
integrated the comments / wall gadget for commenting.
The comment gadget is great but there is one thing which strikes me as
very odd and makes the UI somewhat strained. That is that *replies* to
a comment are ordered newest at the top?

Having things set up this way means that any conversation which builds
up around a reply has to be read *backwards* i.e. from the bottom up.
Would it not be more logical to have the latest *reply* added to the
bottom of the comment rely thread instead?

Original comment:
Robert: "My favourite house pet is a cat"
---- Robert: Suppose you have a point there!"
---- Peter: "Dogs are easier to train"
---- Robert: " No cats are much better!"
---- Peter: "I prefer dogs"

It would be better if ....

Original comment:

I'm *hoping* your suggestion won't be to write my own comment
gadget ;-)

Yes, it would be. It's a known issue, but I'll ping someone and see
if we're making progress on it.

Bob, what about including replies in the comment count as well? IIRC,
only the original comment incremented the count in the gadget.
