What I found was is the default IE opens in the 64bit browser, so if you're using Windows 8 64bit.  Try to open with IE 32bit. That worked for me.

HOW do I make the plug-in work, in really super basic instructions, please.    I am trying to use google earth plug in in MapMyRide.  It gives me the success_recent_install something error message, then it says it's downloaded, and to restart the browser, but it still doesn't work.

This might be an option.

If you are using IE10 with Windows 8 then you will likely have to run the site in IE's compatibility mode. If you are creating a site using the plugin I suggest using the following meta tag.

compatibility meta tag 

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=9">
