Hi, i'm experiencing something very strange :) i click "search desktop" and in my default browser - Firefox 2.0 appears the search query box and i can type whatever i want in it, but when i press the search button firefox tells me - "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." When i copy the links in IE it works perfectly. I've checked the firewall, and firefox is allowed to do anything, but it still can't search... I tried to edit the network settings - and i clicked "manual proxy configuration" and typed "No proxy for: localhost, 127.0.0.1", but for some reason when i restart firefox it doesn't remember the settings. I'll be gratefull if someone helps :)
I'm seeing the same problem on 4different systems, all running XP SP2. One uses NOD32 & standard Windows firewall, two use TrendMicro OfficeScan 8.0, and the last uses Trend Micro Internet Security 2008.
I've tried all 4 with firewalls disabled, AV disabled, running Firefox 2.0.0.7 in safe-mode (even tried the proxy "fix"). On the NOD32 and Internet Security 2008 system I tried completely uninstalling both GD and Firefox and re-installing to no avail.
Strangely on one of the OfficeScan systems just after updating to GD 5.5 the web connection did work with Firefox so I starting using SysInternals Process Monitor to track the differences in execution between the working system and the failing systems. Unfortunately while doing this after about the 10th search or so the working system started failing in exactly the same manner and now even rebooting it won't fix the situation.
On all 4 systems IE 7.0 works fine as does Opera 9.23, only Firefox 2.0.07 (did not try earlier versions) appears to have this problem.
With Firefox I can browse into and modify GD Preferences, I can see the Index Status, Privacy and About pages.
I cannot use Browse Timeline or perform a Search. Either of those results in "The connection was reset" and TCPView shows several connections to port 4664 that take many seconds to clear. Closing/ reopening GD has no effect nor does rebooting or reinstalling.
My problem is exactly the same! I use XP, SP2 and my antivirus is NOD32, the Firefox version is 2.0.0.7 ... Restarting the computer is no use in this situation. I'm really confused because when I first installed it I was able to search several times and then Firefox started with this annoying message. I can't browse the timeline in Firefox nor can i search. Interesting enough i can modify the preferences in Firefox. IE 6 doesn't seem to have any problems though...
Me too, I thought it was just my install - I've uninstalled GD and re- installed and its still broken It's working fine in IE, but I rarely use that, and it's not my default browser.
Seems like Google broke something with GD 5.5 so it doesn't work with Firefox, yeah nice going.

Thank you all for your detailed descriptions of this problem. We're currently investigating the issue, and I'll update you when we have more information. In the meantime, could you let us know what Add-ons you're using with Firefox, as well as whether you're using a personal or work computer?

Extensions: Download Helper 2.4.3 DownThemAll! 0.9.9.10 Google Toolbar for Firefox 3.0.20070525W Password Exporter 1.0.6 Talkback 2.0.0.7 Web Developer 1.1.4

However, I get the same results running Firefox in safe-mode with a new profile (which disables all add-ons) and the two OfficeScan systems I noted above I have no add-ons installed.

The Quick Find results display correctly beneath the dialog as the query text is typed, and I can click on results that link to, for example, text files or Word/Excel documents without problem. But if I click on an email link that has to go through the web browser it also results in "The connection was reset".
Yes it happens when using the QSB, that's how I first noticed it. It's strange that error is "Connection reset" and it only effects Firefox - personally think it could be a bug in Firefox, but I've had to revert back to Google desktop 5.1 in the mean time.

Just thought I would add my 2-cents. Same problem, just as described by others here. FF 2.0.0.7, GD 5.5. This is the first time I've ever installed GD on this computer, so no previous version issues. This is a personal computer.
FireFox add-ons:
Google Browser Sync 1.3.20070523.0 Google Toolbar 3.0.20070525W Talkback 2.0.0.7 DOM Inspector 1.8.1.7
GD fails not only with FireFox2, displaying the "connections reset" error message, but when I made IE7 (Vista Home Premium version) default, it reported "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". Nothing works. My McAfee firewall is configured to allow GD "full access" on my system, and my Spyware Doctor doesn't have any history of blocking GD inquiries. I have configured my FF to allow for Choose "Manual proxy configuration." # Enter "localhost, 127.0.0.1" and in IE I configured IE as requested at: http://desktop.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12229 "Use a proxy server for your LAN" is checked, also check "Bypass proxy server for local addresses."
Nothing works now. GDesktop did work when I first installed it, weeks ago - many MS "patches" and legit / well known programs have intervened over the past weeks. I doubt these patches are the problem - other than McAfee had a update that blocked my email from downloading recently. That was fixed after a couple of days. See: http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=214886 I reinstalled GD over the first installation but that didn't help. Perhaps this is another "Cloud on Vista"? Shall I kill GD 100% and start from scratch, or is there a secret password to whisper?

There is another thread reporting similar issues with 5..5 and Firefox. Someone is reporting that it only happens when users have chosen NOT to index web history. You might want to turn on indexing web history to see if that resolves the issue for you.
Personally I have decided to go back to v5.1 and will wait for the fix - indexing web history would just be bloat for me.

I can confirm in my case if I enable indexing of Web history via GD Preferences, Firefox is able to browse to standard and QSB search results and the Browse Timeline feature also works.
As soon as I disable indexing of Web history I can no longer go to the Browse Timeline page or see search results from within Firefix - it goes back to "The connection was reset" behavior.

Now I remember that I was able to search untill I disabled the indexing of the web history ( which was few times, because I disabled it rather quickly).
I have the very same issue stated above (and for the record, I have a completely different set of extensions than the ones that have been listed by a couple of other users, so maybe that can be ruled out?)
I looked at my options and my Web History indexing was enabled. I tried disabling it to so what would happen, and got the predictable 'connection reset' results. However, when I have web history enabled I can hit "try again" and the search will show up. Also, searching from the online google desk top search bar works just fine. When web history is disabled I cannot get the page to load no matter how many times I hit "retry" (I know, silly that I'd try more than once).
So, there's another piece of evidence. I won't be using GD until this is fixed, and honestly I'm starting to like Windows Desktop Search a little bit better anyway.

All the troubles here tend to be with the new Google Desktop 5.5.709.30344 - Who needs it?
I uninstalled GD5 and installed the very earlier version recent (August 7, 2007) Google Desktop 5.1.707.23222 via http://www.filehippo.com/download_google_desktop_search/?3018 and let my Vista PC update it's indexing, and I now have access to the MANY text, PDF, MS Office etc. docs I have on my PC which is all I wanted anyway.
I say let GD5 go back to the Beta Doghouse where it belongs until it is housebroken.

Just wanted to give everyone a big thanks for helping investigate this problem. Your reports helped us reproduce the issue, and we hope to release the fix in an upcoming version of Desktop.
As some of you have suggested, you should be able to resolve the issue in the meantime by enabling web history indexing. Here's how:
1. Click the "Desktop Preferences" link on your Google Desktop homepage. 2. Select the "Desktop Search" tab. 3. In the "Search Types" section, check the box next to "Web history." 4. Click "Save Preferences."
We'll post to the Help Group when the next version of Google Desktop is released, and you can also keep track of the latest updates on this page in our Help Center:

Do you have any idea when you'll be releasing a new version? Are we talking about hours, days, weeks or months? The workaround you described doesn't satisfy me, as I do not want web history to be indexed. My only option would be to downgrade to 5.1, but I'll leave that if you expect a new version shortly.
I went back to an older version but it only opens results in IE even though my default browser is firefox.
I suppose one thing to try is IE Tab or something similar so GD 5.5 results show up in firefox but rendered using IE. Not sure if that will work, I'll try it after lunch.
As others have said, any idea on a release date for a fix?

I fixed the main problem by enabling "Web History" but I still have a problem. The new version will not view email messages in Outlook, which means I can't get at attachments to the emails. Is there a fix for this problem too??
Thanks!!! Jeff2
