I'm not really trying to rant but it's not the authors of GPL code who
are making money, you missed the point. look up SNesoid/Gensoid.  Yes
in fairness they were eventually removed from android market but there
are a thousand other market stores and the scam had already made a
boat load of cash.

So take the scenario of this:

Open source GPL developer sues the author of scam software this is
assuming he/she even has the money to do so.  All the thief need do is
release the source code after already making the money.  With a
license that specifically limits redistribution the REAL author of the
code would at least have a little more legal protection.  I've stood
in court as an expert witness (not GPL related) most judges do not
understand anything technical so it's not about who is right but who
has the better lawyer, arguing specifics of the GPL in court is futile
when all the judge hears is gibberish.  The GPL is convoluted enough
for most developers as it is.

I believe legally you can make money from GPL, Redhat has made a
business from it.  As long as the GPL license is met and you show that
you've added value to the original project(s) you can charge for the
"value added" parts whether it be the media or delivery method.

To be honest the whole android/ios let's make a quick dollar from open
source code is getting old.
