The proxy I use at work does not appear to require authentication.
Also, this error happens whether or not I check the "Optional: Help
make Chrome better by automatically sending usage statistics and crash
reports to Google." box on the download.
It appears that checking the above box changes the byte at 76A6D in
the downloaded file from 30 to 31 (hex). None of which (I'm guessing)
should make a difference, but...

I am getting this exact same error, and I too am behind a firewall/
proxy. It's not the first time some auto-downloader has failed me
here, and the usual workaround has been to get the 'full installer' -
a package that contains everything it needs to install the software
without doing anything with the network. I can't find a link anywhere
on the chrome site to a full installer. Anyone else know if there is
one? Or if there's some other solution to this problem?

I keep getting the same error. I've tried using firefox, internet
explorer, and netscape to download the setup. I think there's
something wrong with the way the installation program connects with
google to download the app??

I have solved the Problem.
I saw in my Firewall, that the installer tries to download a setup.
With copy and paste I could get this Setup directly and Chrome was
installed.

Google should really be offering the offline installer as an
alternative. I'm sure their small installer is just a gimmick to make
it look like it's a fast to get and install when really it's not any
faster than a full standalone download. (it's all perception, you see
7.8mb you might think OMG, but 475kb is like "wow, it's so small")

Thanks to all who posted links to the full installer, as a workaround
to the problem of installing behind a non-authenticating proxy. I'm
using Chrome to post this, and it works fine through the proxy I have
after it installs.

Trymon! Fantastic work! Finding the path the the full installer was
genius! Now, if you wouldn't mind... Could you do the same for the
Toolbar Beta 5 install too.
I understand Google's wanting to have a great "front-end" for
installing like the "Updater" but when it stands in the way of
installs like this, it is bad. What I don't understand is, when the
Updater install fails, why don't they give you a link to the "full
install" file? What's worse, not having people install your products
through your "great" front-end or not having people install your
products at all - because they can't. Hopefully someone will see
these posts and give some priority to the development efforts needed
to "update" Google Updater. It would take all of 10 hours...
