Subject: Chrome does not install in the Program FIles folder
When I Download Google Chrome It installs it in "C:\documents and
settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome
\Application\chrome.exe", and since that folder is not visible by
another account that is not an administrator, I can not use it with
the Guest account, or any other User account, not even the Power
User's account.

Google Chrome needs to be installed in "C:/Program Files/Google/Google
Chrome...", and even give the option of choosing where to install it.

I was so exited, but already there are so many bugs!, maybe they
should of placed it in  Google Labs

I'm thinking of moving the Chrome folder to the Program Files folder,
but I doubt it will work.

If anyone has a fix for that, or any suggestions please let me know

Installing in "application data" allows chrome to be installed even
when the user is not an admin. On vista this is even more visible
because of the UAC.
I agree that it makes sense to be able to choose where to install. One
reason to not provide this option that i can think of is to keep it
simple and not ask any questions of the user.

The program needs to be installed where people expect it to be
installed, which is in Program Files. At least give us an option.

The way things work currently, each user who wants Google Chrome needs
to (and can) install it separately.

But it is application *data*, not applications ... it's almost as bad
as storing documents in Program Files.

I wonder if this is causing the problems with Symantec Endpoint
Protection. Is it restricting programs running from the application
data directory because they are considered more "at risk"? (Since a
non-admin can install there, it would be easier for malware to install
there.)

Just a thought, anyway ...

I agree, an option to, at least, do an “expert” install so you can
have a choice where to install would be nice. I understand where
Google is coming from but, as someone who’s C windows drive _only_ has
windows on it, I’d like to be able to put it somewhere else.

yes I'm able to install it with any type of account, but as a Program
it should be installed in the Program Fies folder, and not have to
install it on each user

Yes but Just think how easy would it be to just simply install it in
the Program Files folder, and not on all 8 users, or more. Also that
way you are not waisting space on the computer with a Program that
needs to have duplicates in every user account.

This is a problem they have with Google Earth too, there needs to be
an option to choose install location. I'm surprised they did this in
chrome after people have complained about it in GE.
At the very least does anyone know what the rationale is for this?
Circumventing UAC seems to be counterintuitive to the security-minded
design. And if the desire was to have data stored in separate
locations for each user why not set the default install location to
Program Files and then store each users data in a folder under their
documents?

Upon installation they need to ask if you want to install just for
that user or anyone on the system (just like lots of other programs)

If you choose user, it installs to application data...

If you choose everyone.. than it installs to program files.

However.. this is still in beta so they may not of thought that far
ahead yet lol

That is fine for a small place ....

Can you imagine where a UNI/SCHOOL has multiple users with roaming
profiles and everyone has to install it or even CAN install it in
their own folder?

All that data!
All those security issues!
All that bandwidth on roaming profiles!

What about institutions that have program installations disabled???

This is bad, real bad!

Google wants to create competition, fine I help them.
But please google, do it with System Administrators in mind that may
even want to help you get this going!!!!

I agree.

This sort of (silent) installation grossly violates all notion of
'common usage' and 'least surprise'.

Each platform (Windows, Mac, Unix, etc) has clear and well documented
'standards' for how apps should be installed on the platform.

Every single person I've met who tried to install Chrome tripped over
this.

You elevate or runas to install, and then cant find the damn browser
because its gone and done something really weird like installing the
whole app in the user profile of the admin account you used to install
it from (which isnt the one you use to browser with it from).

How do you roll out a known-good version of this app to all your
users?   How do you patch it centrally?  Now you've pushed the
administrative chores down to the end-user.  This is only even
remotely appropriate for home users.   But even for them, its now
different from every other single app in existence, so just adds to
the confusion.

AT THE VERY LEAST since you're so badly diverging from the norm and
the documented standard on Windows, you need to inform people that
you're doing this non-standard thing.  Otherwise, its a double
whammy.  You do something really weird, and then you purposely dont
tell people that you're doing this really weird thing.

The only place on this site that even documents this is one buried kb
article, that you have to search for.

In addition, as a result, the Add/Remove Programs (or equivalent on
Vista) doesnt contain an entry for Chrome.  So now it appears that it
cannot be uninstalled.  And it doesnt put the uninstall icon in the
all users/public start menu, so you cant find it!

This is behavior reminiscent of malware.

I'm sure this was meant well, but come on.  You guys know better than
this.

I agree as well.

Installing in the Application Data folder is going to be an
administrative nightmare.  This allows user without elevated
privileges to install software.  This should never be allowed.  User
without elevated privileges are set that way for a reason.

About the "How do you patch it centrally?" issue.  I have a feeling
that the developers were thinking that it would patch itself whenever
a new version was made available.  Every time I launch this thing my
firewall asks me to allow Google Installer (which is Application Data
\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe) to access the internet.

And I do have an entry in Add or Remove Programs for my installation
called "Google Chrome".  I am on Win XP Professional though.

The only issue I have with the installation directory, is after about
2 reboots %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google
disappears on me until I rerun the installer.

I do however personally think: That if Chrome does not install itself
somewhere under %ProgramFiles% that it should explicitly ask where to
be installed to, and default to there. The only reason I can see for
it to install into a users profile by default, is for *beta* testing
for a signle user.

Footnote: %ProgramFiles% defaults to "%SystemDrive%\Program Files"

You can simply move the \application subfolder of the chrome
installation to somewhere in %ProgramFiles%. Be sure to update your
shortcuts and start Chrome/Chromium with command line parameter -user-
data-dir="<path to your original chrome installation>\User Data"

This does not bode well for my acceptance of this product.

IMHO every installer program should show where the program is being
installed and offer the option to install it somewhere else.

If C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\etc. was chosen because it allows installation when a user is not
allowed to install programs, then the Google team needs to rethink how
securely they claim they are functioning.  Some folks are actually
trying to conform to Sarbanes-Oxley system configuration control
requirements and that type of installation workaround doesn't cut it.
