Developer tools team might be able to help you if you could provide an example of this particular problem.
You might want to use "Copy as HTML" option on the inspected element in Developer Tools.

I agree that it works sometimes with JS generated content. However, I had an example in mind (unfortunately, I cannot find it at the moment), where I had an empty applet-tag in the console (the params within the applet were omitted, probably added by JS). With "show selected source code" I could see the params fully.

The magnifying glass, however, is very useful to select non html elements indeed.

Inspect element does work for things inserted by JS, and you can use
the magnifying glass button at the bottom of the devtools window to
pick an element by clicking on it too..
