Red highlighted items in heap snapshot

I'm trying to find out what's keeping a DOM tree around causing a leak in my app.

The DOM tree elements are highlighted red just like in this image:

What does this mean? As I cannot find an explanation anywhere I've always assumed it means the item is ready for GC - only to find out taking a heap snapshot runs the GC beforehand.

Any pointers would be appreciated!
