Its been a bit of a nightmare for me and my clients and definitely
emphasises the need for a gears/offline facility for us!
Over here in the UK one of our ISP's has been bought out by another
ISP and they have been turning off the old DNS servers if you dont
switch accounts, and this has caused a few problems for a some people
too! I KNEW offline functionality would be a requirement, for some
people on occasions, but the last couple of weeks have been such an
eye opener! LOL

Show off you app with nice error message page!
Things like http://www.giftag.com/ doesn't count, only one plain text:
"You've encountered a problem with giftag.com We've been notified of
this issue and are working to resolve it." (Well this is still much
better then mine, mine is just Python exception message)
Want to see some error pages with good humor.
If the system's fully redundant or whatever, it shouldn't take this
long to switch to backups etc...should it?
It kind of also reveals the truthiness of the statement that you're
running on the same infrastructure as Google...I do wonder if it's the
appengine team's responsibility (with their apparently limited
resources) to fix things when something goes wrong here, or if you
have the full might of Google's support staff out to make things right
when things go belly up. Something tells me it is just the AE
guys.. :|

Kind of a coincidence. Maybe theres less independence between the live
and backup than there should be.
