Is there a way to get device categoty through the API. It seems that the dimension is not included in the documentation. What i would like to see is the device types like: mobile, tablet and desktop. I am able to see that within the UI but not through the API

I don't believe so. However, there are two advanced segments you could use to segment using the API (I've included the segment id): Mobile Traffic (gaid::-11) and Tablet Traffic (gaid::-13).

Yes you can, use the dimension : ga:deviceCategory
