In rpm land, I just add a %check section and run the tests. A non-zero
exit from that section fails the build. My question is: Is there an
debian/ubuntu equivalent to that?

Gah! :) Ok, I did notice the date of the original mail, actually :) But, thought I would give it a shot anyway :) Currently I am the "unofficial" packager for the Debian Sparc port of Subsurface, which is a dive logging application (that also has OS/X and Windoze ports available).
